Manchester United succumbed to yet another defeat after they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United in the English Premier League (EPL) on Monday night. The loss was United’s fourth straight defeat across all competitions this season, with the Red Devils yet to win a match since beating Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League on 15 December.
United have already lost nine matches in 19 this Premier League season, including six in 11 matches under new manager Ruben Amorim. With three straight home defeats, this is United’s worst home run since the 1970s. United are currently languishing in 14th place with 22 points, four spots and seven points above the relegation zone.
Their defeat to Newcastle prompted Amorim to admit that his side might be in a relegation battle. “That is really clear so we have to fight,” the former Sporting boss said after the game.
“It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty. We have to fight in the next game,” he added.
Have Manchester United ever been relegated from the Premier League?
Manchester United have never been relegated from the English Premier League since the revamped top-flight competition came into existence in 1992. They are only one of the eight clubs to have never been relegated from the Premier League.
The last time United were relegated from the English top-flight was when they finished the 1973/74 season in 21st place in the 22-team standings of the First Division. United played the 1974-75 season in the Second Division but won the title that season and returned to the top-flight. United have remained in the top-flight ever since. United have never been relegated below the second tier of the English club football system. Before 1973/74 season, United had been relegated four times —1894, 1922, 1931 and 1937.
