Manchester United are planning a major change in the midfield, with manager Ruben Amorim keen to strengthen the position in the next transfer window. Amorim is turning his attention to midfield, where several players’ futures remain uncertain, as per a new report.
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have been the preferred options in midfield so far this season, but both are expected to part ways with the club soon. Casemiro’s contract is nearing its end, while Fernandes has been linked with a potential big-money move away from Old Trafford.
Kobbie Mainoo, who reportedly wanted to leave during the summer transfer window, could be allowed to go if the club receives a right offer. But right now, Mainoo wants to improve and feature regularly for United with his ultimate goal to play for England in the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Amorim shortlists midfield targets
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Amorim has already shortlisted players to target in the next window. According to the Daily Mirror, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who was heavily linked with a £100 million switch to United in the summer, is among the top targets. The deal didn’t materialise, but the club still wants to get him.
Former Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher is also on United’s radar. He was close to a loan move earlier this year, but Atletico Madrid, his current club, are only willing to sanction a permanent deal. Gallagher’s playing time has reduced this season, and he is reportedly open to returning to England.
Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson are also being monitored by United. Wharton, who has become a key player for Crystal Palace, is booked until 2029, making any potential deal expensive. Anderson, meanwhile, has impressed for Nottingham Forest, attracting interest from other clubs as well.
Amorim and United are expected to make midfield a top priority in the next window, as they look to find the right balance in the squad. Despite winning back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time under Amorim, the team’s overall performance still hasn’t reached the desired level.
