Manchester United are outside the top half of the English Premier League after their latest embarrassing defeat to Tottenham. On Sunday, the Erik ten Hag-led Man United lost 0-3 to Spurs at home , leaving them with just seven points from six matches. This is the joint-fewest number of points for Manchester United after six games of a Premier League season.
Man United, who lost to Brighton earlier this season, are winless in the last three matches including a spiritless 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League.
The latest setback at the Old Trafford has led to former players and experts asking for change at Man United.
While many expected Ten Hag to be sacked after the last season when the club finished eighth in the Premier League, he was given a one-year extension post winning the FA Cup earlier this year.
‘They sank really low’
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville led the attack on manager Ten Hag on Sunday as he said that he had never seen the club sink so low.
“It’s one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag - and that is saying something. It is really bad. Today has shocked me about how low they have gone,” ex-United captain Neville said on Sky Sports. “That felt like one of those days where they sank really low.”
Jamie Redknapp who was part of the panel on Sky Sports said: “I just don’t see how he [Ten Hag] can keep his job. He looks completely lost and I don’t know how he can turn it around.
“He has already had enough time. I just don’t see how he is the man to take it forward - the only problem is I don’t know who is, it’s such a difficult job.”
Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage also said that time for change has come at Manchester United.
“I think they’ve got to make a big decision this week - I think his time might be up,” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.
‘It will take time’
Ten Hag, however, put up a defiant face after the defeat and said that he needed more time at the club to turn things around.
“No, I am not thinking about this (he said on the possibility of him getting a sack). I think we all made together this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group in the summer.
“We made the decision from a clear review what we have to improve as an organisation and how we want to construct a squad and all the decision-making is with togetherness. But we knew it will take some time.
“I think we will get better, we need some time. We are all on one page or in one boat together, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and the players group as well. I don’t have that concern.”
