Casemiro’s contract with Manchester United will be coming to an end at the conclusion of the ongoing season and the Red Devils are in a fix over how to extend his stay at Old Trafford while also being astute about the financial aspect of the deal.
According to a report in the Manchester Evening News, United are planning to extend Casemiro’s contract but also want the defensive midfielder to settle for a pay cut.
Casemiro has been a rock in the defensive structure of Ruben Amorim’s side this season and has re-established himself as a key player in the United set up after an ordinary run last year.
However, despite his brilliance, the Red Devils are not going all in to force him to stay after his contract ends.
Age and wage playing a part
Casemiro is currently among the highest-paid players in the United squad and the team is looking to reduce their wage bills. At 33, he is not getting any younger is also reportedly playing a part in United’s thinking.
With Casemiro being in the form that he is, it could well turn into a tough negotiation for United who have heavily relied on the midfielder this season.
The Brazilian was linked to Saudi Pro League sides ahead of the season, but he chose to stay at Old Trafford. If negotiations fail, he could head to the Gulf kingdom or even return to Brazil.
“Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen," Amorim had said ahead of United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham last week. “My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem. I don’t know what is going to happen. Let’s focus on this season. I’m really happy with Casemiro, he is really important.”
United and Casemiro will be in action next on November 24 in the Premier League home fixture against Everton.
