Spanish football manager Pep Guardiola has been at Manchester City since 2016, building an almost invincible empire. The Manchester club has won the Premier League title six times in these eight years and all four times since 2020. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2023, the FIFA Club World Cup in the same year and the FA Cup twice, but Guardiola’s domination of English football could soon end, if reports are to be believed.
Begiristain exit can trigger Pep’s decision
Guardiola’s exit from England could be inspired by reports that Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain is set to leave in 2025. Begiristain made Guardiola the coach at Barcelona in 2008 when he was director of football there before moving to City in 2010. He also played a major role in bringing his former teammate to City in 2016 as their new head coach.
According to reports, Begiristain and Guardiola share a strong relationship, with the former being the key figure behind all City transfers. Begiristain and Guardiola apparently take breakfast together regularly to discuss the affairs of the club. Hence it is felt that if Begiristain leaves in 2025, Gaurdiola will follow him.
Pep yet to commit future at Man City
The Spanish manager also has a contract that ends in 2025 and he is yet to commit to a new contract.
“What can I say? Thank you so much, I fell in love since the first day I arrived here, let’s see [what will happen] – look at how everything is going and how connected we are. When it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen,” Guardiola recently said about his future at Man City.
It is also reported that former footballer and Sporting Lisbon’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, could replace Begiristain at City next year and this can also push Guardiola out as the Portuguese is expected to bring in a completely new transfer policy and playing philosophy, which may not be in a complete match to the Spanish gaffer’s ideas.
