Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim could hand a surprise comeback to an out-of-favour midfielder for the blockbuster clash against Liverpool on Sunday. The Sun states that Amorim is considering recalling Uruguayan defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte to the starting lineup for the match at Anfield.
Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo have mostly been on the bench this season, with Amorim preferring the pairing of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. But things can change against Liverpool. Casemiro and Bruno were absent from training on Thursday as they returned from the international break. Also, missing were Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo, who were given extra rest despite undergoing individual training at Carrington.
Ugarte was part of the training with senior players and The Sun has said that Amorim is considering the 24-year-old as a surprise pick for the Liverpool match. Ugarte did not play for Uruguay in the international break as Marco Biesla excluded him from matches against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan. It was an experimental squad and Ugarte was given rest by the national team.
Man United to recall Ugarte for Liverpool game?
As a result, Ugarte is fitter and fresher, which could lead to his exclusion. In comparison, Casemiro played both matches for Brazil against Japan and South Korea in the international break and it’s quite possible he may sit out for Ugarte.
Ugarte, however, has a poor record this season, losing all three matches he started in the English Premier League and League Cup. With Ugarte in the starting XI, Man United lost matches to Manchester City, Brentford and Grimsby Town.
Ugarte, however, remains motivated to force himself into the starting XI and the Liverpool game could be the best opportunity to impress Amorim.
“We haven’t started the season very well,” he told El Observador. “My level wasn’t the best either, we have to be realistic and honest.
“But I’m very confident, I have a very good relationship with the coach. I work well and I’m very excited and eager to earn a starting spot.”
