Mohun Bagan Super Giant vs Mumbai City FC, ISL 2023-24 Final Preview: The stage is set for one last battle in the 10th season of the Indian Super League (ISL) with defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant set to square off against Mumbai City FC in Kolkata on Saturday.
The Mariners will have the additional benefit of home advantage over the Islanders, with the summit clash taking place at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, a.k.a. the Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata.
Mohun Bagan had bounced back from a 1-2 defeat at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium in the first leg of their semi-final clash against Odisha FC with a 2-0 victory at home.
Mumbai City, on the other hand, won both legs of their last-four clash against FC Goa, scoring thrice in the last six minutes of the game to stun the Gaurs 3-2 at the Fatorda Stadium before dishing out a clinical 2-0 victory in the return leg at the Mumbai Football Arena.
The two sides had met in the final of the 2020-21 season, in which a final-minute winner from Bipin Singh helped Mumbai City clinch their only ISL title till date.
Mohun Bagan had earlier defeated Mumbai City in the final Match Week of this season to win the League Winners’ Shield, which the Islanders had won twice in the past including in the 2022-23 season.
Though Mohun Bagan is the more storied of the two clubs with a legacy spanning more than a century, it’s Mumbai City who dominate the head-to-head rivalry against the Mariners.
The Islanders won six times in nine meetings in the Indian top flight with Mohun Bagan’s only victory against the Petr Kratky-coached side being their 2-1 win on 15 April that helped them clinch the shield. Two games between the two sides have ended in a draw.
