Lionel Messi in tears after being subbed out of Copa America final with injury

Lionel Messi was in tears after an injury forced him to be subbed off during the Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia on Monday. The videos of Messi breaking down in tears while sitting on the Argentine substitute bench are going viral on social media platforms.

The 2022 World Cup winner was subbed off in the 66th minute of the Copa America final for Nicolas Gonzalez after appearing to suffer a non-contact injury after falling in the 64th minute.

He had earlier suffered an injury on the right leg in the first half. Moments before the half-time whistle, Messi chased the ball and tried to kick it before it went out of his control. His right leg landed awkwardly as he took a blow from contact with Colombia’s Santiago Arias.

The star footballer immediately went down with the leg injury, writhed in pain, and rolled over several times. Messi was grabbing his lower right leg. He received medical attention on his right leg and eventually stood back on his feet as he went out of the game and re-entered the match.

He was eventually taken off in the second half.

The 37-year-old had suffered a leg injury and discomfort throughout the tournament and also missed Argentina’s group stage finale.

Argentina eventually won the Copa America 2024 title with a 1-0 win over Colombia . Lautaro Martinez scored the winner in the 112th minute.
