Manchester United were one of the major clubs who were expected to make big signings during the January transfer window, which closed on Monday. United were linked with attacking options like Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, but the Red Devils failed to sign either of these players.
While Nkunku has decided to stay at Stamford Bridge for now, Tel has secured a loan move to Tottenham till the end of the season. United’s negotiations with Tel, in fact, reportedly collapsed after they got to know of Bayern’s loan fee of £5 million. United are in desperate need of a striker now that Marcus Rashford has headed to Aston Villa on loan.
Why Manchester United failed to sign a striker
Manchester United endured an underwhelming January transfer window, sealing just two signings. Their major focus was on defence, signing left-back Parick Dorgu from Lecce for £25m, including £4m as potential bonus figures. United also signed teenage centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal and also paid a compensation fee in return.
According to a report in Goal.com, United are pleased with acquiring young and talented players while also not needing to pay out expensive fees. United also face financial constraints amid Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limits, which is another reason why they didn’t sign a striker. Having said that, both Dorgu and Heaven are recruited for the long term with even affordable player fees.
While Dorgu has signed a contract till June 2030, with the option to extend for another year, Heaven has a contract valid till June 2029, also with the option for another year.
Manchester United’s Premier League struggles
Manchester United have had a far from perfect season and are currently in 13th place in the English Premier League with 29 points from 24 matches. United, though, have qualified for the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League after finishing the league stage in third place with 18 points. United are also in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
