The January Transfer Window is currently underway, and while some clubs might be inclined towards making wholesale changes to their existing roster, several more will be looking to make minor additions after spending a fortune over the summer. The winter transfer window opened on 1 January and will close at 7 pm GMT on 2 February. While 31 January is the usual deadline for the winter transfer window, it wasn’t observed this year since it falls on a weekend.
With the year 2026 entering its fourth day, we take a look at some of the major trades that have been conducted so far and some of the biggest rumours doing the rounds from across the world, including and especially in the major European leagues:
Johnson to Crystal Palace
The biggest confirmed development so far in the January window is that of Tottenham Hotspur’s Brennan Johnson joining Crystal Palace on a £35 million deal. Bournemouth were also interested in the 24-year-old striker, who was Spurs’ leading goal-scorer last season, but Johnson eventually chose Palace after successful talks with manager Oliver Glasner.
“Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability and with all the upcoming games he will be a valuable addition to the squad,” Glasner said in response to Johnson’s signing.
Man City closing in on Semenyo
The reason why Bournemouth were interested in signing Johnson from Tottenham was to replace Antoine Semenyo, who is widely expected to join Manchester City this month, with Pep Guardiola’s side reportedly set to sign him for a fee of £65 million.
As per the latest reports doing the rounds, a deal between the winger and the 10-time English top-flight champions has been reached in principle, and it’s just a matter of putting pen on paper. Semenyo, meanwhile, was part of Bournemouth’s lineup for Saturday’s home game against Arsenal despite the City rumours.
Will Salah stay at Liverpool?
Mohamed Salah appeared set for an exit from Liverpool after his infamous “thrown under the bus” comment after the draw at Leeds, but has since appeared to have patched up with manager Arne Slot and the iconic club. But an exit could still be on the cards for the senior Egyptian forward, even if on a temporary basis.
A permanent move for Salah from Liverpool would be too big a deal for the January window and would ideally be something explored during the summer, but a loan move until the end of the season is something that both parties might just be interested in, with reports linking him to a move to Real Madrid. Salah was also heavily linked to a move to the Saudi Pro League, and while chances of that materialising this month appear slim, it’s not completely off the table just yet.
Madrid eyeing Gravenbirch
Salah, however, isn’t the only Liverpool player linked to Madrid this month, with Los Blancos also eyeing defensive midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. According to Fichajes, the 15-time European champions are reportedly ready to shell out €120 million (£105m/$141m) to secure the Dutch international’s services.
Rodryo headed for England?
There could also be an outflow from Madrid this month with Rodrygo widely expected to leave the Spanish giants during the winter transfer window. Fichajes also reports that Arsenal have prepared an offer for the Brazilian winger in their pursuit to bolster their attack as the current Premier League leaders aim to finally lift the title after finishing runners-up in each of the last three seasons.
The report adds that the offer for Rodrygo is in the range of €60 million (£56million), with Saudi Pro League’s Al-Hilal also interested in making a similar offer.
