The stage is set for one final showdown in the 2024-25 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) with Mohun Bagan set to face Bengaluru FC in the summit clash in Kolkata on Saturday. Both teams progressed to the ISL Cup final after winning the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate, overcoming a 2-1 away defeat with a 2-0 victory at home. While Bengaluru FC defeated two-time runners-up FC Goa , Mohun Bagan overcame a stiff challenge from from Jamshedpur FC .
Before the two teams lock horns at Kolkata’s iconic Yuva Bharati Krirangan, a.k.a. the Salt Lake Stadium, we take a look at how Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC have fared in past ISL Cup finals:
Mohun Bagan Super Giant – Three finals (one win; two losses)
The ‘Mariners’ have been among the most consistent teams since joining the ISL along with arch-rivals East Bengal in 2020. Not only did Mohun Bagan win a second consecutive League Shield this year by finishing at the top of the table with an eight-point cushion, they have also featured in the ISL Cup final four times in five seasons, including the upcoming contest.
Mohun Bagan had suffered a 2-1 loss against Mumbai City FC in their maiden ISL season in 2020-21 and would lose to the ‘Islanders’ again three years later, this time by a 3-1 margin . Their only triumph, however, came against the team they will be facing less than 24 hours from now, with Mohun Bagan defeating Bengaluru FC 4-3 on penalties after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time.
Come Saturday, Mohun Bagan will hope to make it two-in-two against BFC in ISL Cup finals and complete the season double – winning the League Shield as well as the ISL Cup in the same season – after coming so close last year.
Bengaluru FC – Three finals (one win; two losses)
Like Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru too have featured in three ISL finals though that is spread across a much bigger time period – with the ‘Blues’ having made their ISL debut in 2017-18, three years before the two Kolkata giants joined the fold.
Like the ‘Mariners’, BFC had reached the ISL final in their maiden season only to finish as the second-best team, losing to Chennaiyin FC 3-2. Bengaluru, however, would bounce back in style the following year, defeating FC Goa 1-0 in the final of the 2018-19 season thanks to an extra-time strike by Rahul Bheke at the Mumbai Football Arena.

Bengaluru won their second title in the 2023 Cup final thanks to second-half goals from Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna, only for Dimitrios Petratos to level the scores with an 85th-minute penalty that also completed his brace.
Memories of that heartbreak will still be fresh in the minds of Gerard Zaragoza’s men as they eye revenge at Mohun Bagan’s home turf.
