Liverpool are one step away from winning the Premier League title after Arsenal faltered against Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Arsenal had the opportunity to extend Liverpool’s wait at least till next month but their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace means Liverpool are now just inches away from winning the Premier League title, while the trophy hopes for the Gunners have almost fizzled away for one more season.
Liverpool’s Premier League title scenarios
Arsenal began the match with 66 points from 33 games, while Liverpool had 79 points from the same number of matches. Five wins from their remaining fixtures would have allowed Arsenal to surpass Liverpool’s tally, finishing on 81 points. If Liverpool were to lose all of their final five matches and remain on 79, Arsenal could have clinched the title — provided they won all five, including the game against Crystal Palace.
However, now, Arsenal can only earn a maximum of 12 points from the last four games, which means they can only reach 79 points in total. Liverpool already have 79 points and a draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday will make them the new Premier League champion.
Even a draw would not matter much as they would become champion with just one more point from their remaining give games.
Can Arsenal still win the Premier League title?
Yes. There’s one freakish way but for that, Liverpool will have to lose all their matches and Arsenal will have to win all of theirs. Four wins in four matches will take Arsenal to 79 points. Liverpool already have 79 points. So, if both teams finish the 2024-25 Premier League season on 79 points, then the goal difference (GD) will be used to pick the winner.
Currently, Liverpool have a lead with a positive goal difference of 44 while Arsenal have a GD of 34.
Arsenal will need to improve their goal difference and hope Liverpool lose all their remaining matches while they win their next four games to clinch the Premier League title. However, such a scenario is highly unlikely.
Arsenal vs Palace wrap
Interestingly, Arsenal were the first to take the lead against Palace at the Emirates Stadium after Jakub Kiwior scored in just the third minute and Leandro Trossard added another in the first half to make it 2-1 after Eberechi Eze had equalised for the away team.
However, Arsenal were not able to hold onto their lead twice and Palace substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a sensational equaliser in the 83rd minute to seal a 2-2 draw for his team.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was livid with his team and rued the lack of consistency.
“We are disappointed with the result and performance. We didn’t find enough consistency in actions to dominate the game. It’s part of football and cost us two points. Today they were very organised and deserved credit. We have to do much better,” Arteta said after the match.
Arsenal, however, are still competing for the Champions League and face PSG in the semi-finals.
