FIFPro issues statement on ISL, highlighting concerns over uncertainty and impact on players

The serious issue concerning the Indian Super League (ISL) has drawn the attention of FIFPro, the global body representing footballers.

Paying heed to the ISL situation, the FIFPro has issued a statement expressing concern about the uncertainty surrounding the tournament. As an organization that prioritises the interests of footballers, FIFPro has highlighted how the suspension of the ISL has adversely affected the careers and livelihoods of players.

FIFPro’s statement on ISL

“The lack of clarity for players over the 2025-26 ISL season, arising from a dispute over the league’s organisation and governance that has led to its indefinite suspension, is having a significant impact on their livelihoods, careers, and wellbeing,” FIFPro said.

As the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) is set to expire in December, the future of the Indian Super League (ISL) remains uncertain. Consequently, several clubs have halted team operations and frozen players’ salaries. According to FIFPro, these actions are unlawful and a direct violation of players’ labour rights.

“Players have been subjected to unilateral and unlawful suspensions of their employment contracts until further notice. These actions represent a direct breach of the players’ labour rights and are causing significant distress.”

FIFPro also conveyed that the body along with Football Players Association of India (FPAI) are in constant communication with the affected players across the ISL. The matter has been brought to the notice of both FIFA and Asian Football Confederation, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.

Lastly, FIFPro urged all parties involved in the issue (AIFF, FSDL, and club owners) to work closely with the FPAI. The players’ union has made two immediate demands: first, to provide clarity by announcing the Indian Super League (ISL) season schedule, and second, to ensure that clubs fulfill their contractual obligations towards the players.
