FIFA chief Gianni Infantino has confirmed that USA president Donald Trump will co-present the trophy to the World Cup winner later this year. The declaration from FIFA is not surprising, and only the latest in its attempt to get closer to US president Trump.
Only a select few are allowed to touch the FIFA World Cup trophy, and Donald Trump falls among those eligible. As per FIFA rules, only World Cup winners and heads of state are permitted to touch the trophy.
FIFA’s unconditional love for Trump
“This (FIFA World Cup) trophy will be handed out on the 19th of July to the captain of the team who will win the World Cup,” Infantino said at the Davos Kick-off for FIFA World Cup 2026 event at the World Economic Forum. “I will give it together with the president of the United States, the host country. Nobody can touch this trophy.”
The FIFA World Cup 2026 final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The tournament, which will have 48 teams for the first time, is being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
To pamper Trump, FIFA constituted a new Peace Prize award in November and handed it over to the US president in December without explaining how the winner was chosen. The award was established after Trump missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize.
“You definitely deserve the first FIFA Peace Prize for your action, for what you have obtained – in your way – but you obtained it in an incredible way,” Infantino said while handing over the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to Trump. “And you can always count, Mr president, on my support, on the support of the entire football community, or soccer community to help you make peace and make the world prosper.”
Trump’s dream of winning the Nobel Prize, however, came true recently when Maria Corina Machado, who won the award officially in 2025 for fighting for democracy in Venezuela, decided to hand it over to the US president after he captured incumbent Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro earlier this month
“I thought it was very nice. She said, ‘you know, you’ve ended eight wars and nobody deserves this prize more than, in history, than you do,” Trump said. “And I thought it was a very nice gesture. And by the way, I think she’s a very fine woman. And we’ll be talking again.”
Sadly, the Nobel Committee has announced that the Peace Prize cannot be revoked, transferred, or shared.
All of this has only brought to the fore Trump’s obsession with collecting or handing over trophies. Last year, he stayed back on stage after presenting the FIFA Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea, celebrating with the players on the podium.
