Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was satisfied with his team's 4-0 win over Everton in the English Premier League on Sunday, but admitted that United have a long way to go. Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee scored two goals each as United climbed to ninth place with the win over the Toffees, and currently have 19 points from 13 matches.
This is United’s biggest Premier League win of the season so far, and comes only a few days after edging Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt 3-2 in the UEFA Europa League. Amorim termed the win as a “good” result but admitted that the Red Devils were pragmatic. “The result was good, but we were pragmatic,” Amorim told broadcasters Sky Sports on Sunday. “I think it was not pretty but we were pragmatic, our job is to win but you can feel that we have a long way to go.
‘Focus on the way result appeared’: Amorim
“You can feel that in the first minutes that we are OK and then Everton control the game and then in the right moments we scored the goals and that changes the game. You have to not just focus on the result but focus on the way the result appeared,” added the former Portugal international.
Amorim urged his players to focus more on the performance rather than the outcome. “We have so much to do but it’s better to work with victories. Let’s focus on the performance more than the result. You can feel it during the game. It isn’t a line of top performances, it is a rollercoaster of performances,” he added. “We have some moments when we are good but then we have moments when we have to suffer. We did it again like in the Europa League. We need time to train and time to improve, but like I said, it’s better to work with victories,” reiterated Amorim.
Amorim heaps praise on Diallo
Amorim was also impressed with Ivory Coast international Amad Diallo, who assisted two of United’s goals on Sunday. “He was really good again. “He’s in a great moment, but that moment starts with Ruud. I just take advantage of Ruud’s work with Amad. He was really good defending and really good attacking, so he has to continue to play like that,” said Amorim.
The 39-year-old however feels that it is important to manage Diallo’s workload. “You could feel at the end of the game that he was really, really tired, so we have also to manage that as he increases his physical ability,” said Amorim.
United next travel to London to face Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday, before returning to welcome Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
