The Durand Cup derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium was called off due to ongoing protests in the city over the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
The decision to call off the game was made after a meeting between Kolkata Police and tournament organisers, with the two iconic clubs set to receive a point each and fans set to receive a refund.
“Both the teams will be awarded a point each, while the fans will get full refund for the tickets they bought,” an official told PTI.
It is also learnt that all the Durand Cup matches slated in Kolkata could be shifted to Jamshedpur. An official communication is awaited.
Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have advanced to the knockout stage of the ongoing Durand Cup, having collected seven points from three matches. Both teams had won their previous group-stage clashes before Sunday’s derby, the final Group A fixture, was called off.
There has been widespread protests following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city on 9 August.
On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the rape and murder of their colleague.
