Average revenue of the top-15 women’s football clubs in Europe grew by 61% to 4.3 million euros over the last year, according to analysis by Deloitte. All but three of these 15 clubs, in their Money League study, recorded double-digit revenue growth in 2022-23. Barcelona are top of the tree after revenues increased by 74% to 13.4 million euros, with Manchester United second with 8 million euros. Real Madrid are third with €7.4 million - recording a massive 416% increase from 2021-22. Manchester City (€5.3m), Arsenal (€5.3m) complete the top five. Chelsea (€4.1m) are sixth, PSG (€3.7m) seventh, Eintracht Frankfurt (€3.6m) eighth, Bayern Munich (€3.1m) ninth and Tottenham (€2.6m) tenth. The overall revenue for the teams comprise of matchday revenue, broadcast money and commercial revenue. The women’s clubs have typically received contributions from their associated men’s teams to help meet the funding shortfall, with the 15 clubs receiving on an average €1.5 million. “There’s huge potential in women’s football, we have seen this growth for a few years now so it proves it is not just a one off,” Amy Clarke, women’s sport lead in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, told BBC Sport. “We are seeing huge explosion in interest in the women’s game. We had record crowd and increased attendances last season resulting in higher matchday revenue. And we are seeing a really big focus on clubs becoming sustainable in their own right.” Unlike men’s football clubs, which relies traditionally on lucrative broadcast deals, only 20% of the women’s clubs average revenue came from broadcast contracts, with commercial revenue accounting for 58% and matchday 22%. Barcelona recorded the highest broadcast revenue (€2 million) followed by Chelsea (€1.9m) and Arsenal (€1.7m). Barcelona also dominated the commercial revenue generated among the 15 clubs. The Catalans recorded €8.5m in commerical revenue in 2022/23 ahead of Manchester United (€6m) and Real Madrid (€5.8m).
