Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has said that he intends to end his playing career with his current club Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. When asked about his potential retirement in a recent interview, Ronaldo expressed his desire to play in Saudi Arabia for another “two or three years” before possibly hanging up his boots. Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December 2022 following an unceremonious exit from Manchester United. He has scored 68 goals for Al Nassr since joining the club.
“I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al Nassr,” the 39 year-old told Portuguese news channel News Now. “I’m very happy at this club, I feel good in this country too. I’m happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue," he added.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United player started in every match for Portugal at Euro 2024, where they reached the quarter-finals before going down to France on penalties. Ronaldo plans to keep playing for his country for now, and has said that when he decides to call it quits from international football, it will be a “spontaneous” and “well-thought” one.
“When I leave the national team, I won’t tell anyone in advance and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a very well thought-out one,” he continued.
Portugal are scheduled to take on Croatia and Scotland in UEFA Nations League matches in September. “Right now what I want is to be able to help the national team in their upcoming matches. We have the Nations League ahead of us and I would really like to play.”
The former Juventus player does not plan to get into management once he retires from football. “At the moment, I’m not thinking about being a coach of the first team or any team.
“It doesn’t even cross my mind, I’ve never thought about it. I don’t see my future going through that. I see myself doing other things outside of football, but only God knows what the future holds," sad Ronaldo, who has scored 899 career goals till date.
