Chelsea football club and its players will be making a financial donation to the family of Diogo Jota, who died along with his brother in a tragic car crash last month . Chelsea players and the club will be financing the assistance from the FIFA Club World Cup bonus they received last month.

Chelsea defeated Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup final to clinch the inaugural trophy. As a result, the players were handed a handsome £11.4 million ($15.5m) bonus pool, which was to be divided equally among all the footballers who represented the club at the mega event.

The Athletic says the Chelsea players had an internal discussion and the club has decided that Jota’s family will also be given one share, the same as what a player will be getting at Chelsea. This means Jota’s family will be handed £368,184 ($500,000) as a gesture of tribute by Chelsea’s players.

Jota died at the age of 28 after his Lamborghini Huracán suffered a tyre blowout, leading to a fatal accident. The accident took place in Zamora in Spain. Jota was travelling in the car with his brother André Silva to catch a ferry to reach Liverpool. He was returning to the city for pre-season training.

The accident was so brutal that both men died at the scene.

Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer.

As a footballer, Portuguese Jota started his career with Paços de Ferreira’s youth teams before joining Atletico Madrid in 2016. He also played for Portuguese club Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League before joining Liverpool.

Under Jurgen Klopp’s coaching, Jota won the FA Cup and League Cup and the Premier League title last season with Arne Slot at the helm.

In the upcoming season of the Premier League, Liverpool start their title defence at Anfield against Bournemouth on 16 August (Saturday), while Chelsea face Crystal Palace on Sunday at home. Liverpool will be paying tribute to Jota in their opening game.
