Chelsea are reportedly considering paying a penalty fee to avoid triggering the mandatory buyout clause in Jadon Sancho’s loan deal from Manchester United . The winger, who joined Chelsea on loan at the end of the summer transfer window, initially impressed but has struggled for form in recent months.

Sancho made a bright start at Stamford Bridge, registering three assists in his first three appearances and adding two more assists along with a couple of goals in his next seven games. However, his form has dipped significantly since December, with just one assist and no goals in his last 14 appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea seeks escape route from Jadon Sancho’s buyout clause

As per the terms of the loan agreement, Chelsea would be obligated to make the deal permanent for £25 million ($32 million) if they finish above 14th in the Premier League table. With the Blues currently sitting in fourth place with 14 wins in 29 matches, the clause is expected to be triggered automatically. However, given Sancho’s struggles, Chelsea now appear keen to back out of the deal.

According to reports in various media outlets, Chelsea could opt to pay a financial penalty instead of completing the permanent transfer. The exact amount of this penalty remains undisclosed but is expected to be lower than the £25 million buyout clause. This would allow Chelsea to cut their losses and avoid committing to Sancho.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have already made moves in the transfer market to reinforce their squad. The club has reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to sign youngsters Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo in a joint deal worth up to £62 million ($81 million approx). The 17-year-old Quenda, who had also attracted interest from Manchester United, will join Chelsea in 2026 for £43 million ($50 million approx). Essugo, currently on loan at LaLiga club Las Palmas, will move to London this summer for a fixed fee of £18 million ($23 million).
