UEFA Champions League Draw LIVE: The draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 will be taking place on Friday, 21 February at the Union of European Football Associations’ headquarters in Nyom, Switzerland at 4.30 pm IST (11 am GMT). Europe’s premier tournament for club football has had a revamped format this season, wherein all 36 participating clubs competed in a single league and played eight different opponents instead of three in previous editions.
The format of the knockouts, however, remains the same, wherein the Round of 16 will be followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final – which will be taking place in Munich on 31 May.
Out of the 16 teams qualifying for the knockouts, eight teams finishing at the top of the standings at the end of the group stage qualified directly for the Round of 16. Teams finishing between the ninth and 24th positions then competed in a series of knockout playoffs in order to fill the remaining slots.
Premier League leaders Liverpool finished atop the standings with 21 points while FC Barcelona finished second with 19. Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa are the other teams that secured direct entry into the knockouts.
Defending champions Real Madrid, on the other hand, had to face defending English champions Manchester City in the knockout playoffs in order to join arch-rivals Barcelona and other teams in the Round of 16. The other teams qualifying through this route are Bayern Munich, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Paris Saint-Germain and PSV Eindhoven.
