Bengaluru FC vs East Bengal, ISL 2024-25 Preview: East Bengal will be aiming to put the drama surrounding Anwar Ali’s controversial signing aside when they take on Bengaluru FC at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Ali has been in the headlines this week for reasons that have little to do with his on-field performances. The India defender had joined the ‘Red and Gold Brigade’ after terminating his four-year loan deal with Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
As a result, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Players’ Status Committee not only suspended him for four months, they also ordered him as well as East Bengal and his parent club Delhi FC to pay Mohun Bagan Rs 12.90 crore as compensation. The order, however, was subsequently withdrawn following the Delhi High Court’s intervention, with the AIFF set to come up with a fresh order.
Both BFC and EB had a disappointing run last season — while Bengaluru finished 10th, East Bengal have finished ninth in three of the last four seasons. And both teams will be hoping for strong starts as they eye a turnaround in the 11th season of India’s top-flight division.
The match will also be a special one for Indian football as it will be veteran striker Sunil Chhetri’s first ISL appearance since he bid an emotional goodbye to the Indian team and international football in June this year.
The 11th season of the ISL began with a thrilling 2-2 draw between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. In the other game on the Saturday double header, Chennaiyin FC began the season with a 3-2 victory over Odisha FC.
