Rodri was named the men’s Ballon d’Or 2024 winner on Monday, beating three Real Madrid players to the coveted honour. Rodri who helped Manchester City win the Premier League title last season and inspired Spain to the Euro 2024 title earlier this year, is the first player from the English club to win the Ballon d'Or award . Rodri’s victory, however, did not go down well with Spanish giants Real Madrid who felt that winger Vinicius Junior, who La Liga and Champions League with the club last season, deserved to win the Ballon d’Or.
The reports that Vinicius will not be winning the Ballon d’Or 2024 were leaked way before the event was to take place, leading to a boycott from Real Madrid.
Vinicius controversy hits Ballon d’Or 2024 ceremony
Vinicius had a highly successful 2023-24 season where he scored 24 goals and made 11 assists in 39 matches across all competitions for Madrid.
“If the award criteria doesn’t give it to Vinicius as the winner, then those same criteria should point to Carvajal as the winner,” Real Madrid told AFP. “As this was not the case, it is clear that Ballon d’Or-UEFA does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected.”
Real Madrid, however, had three players in the top five with Vinicius, Bellingham, and Carvajal featuring in the second, third, and fourth places respectively.
Man City striker Erling Haaland took the fifth spot, just ahead of now Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe. Lautaro Martínez (Inter Milan), Lamine Yamal (Barcelona), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) and Harry Kane (England) completed the final 10.
