Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim defended the defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday, stating that the “better team” lost, while also issuing an injury update regarding club captain Bruno Fernandes, who could be out of action for “a while.”

Man United dropped to seventh in the English Premier League table with a 2-1 loss at Villa. Morgan Rogers’ brace gave the Villains a massive win, while Matheus Cunha scored the only goal for United. As a result of their victory, Villa are just three points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Amorim speaks on Fernandes’ injury

Besides the loss, Man United also suffered a massive blow when captain Fernandes was forced to leave the pitch holding his left calf in the 46th minute. Fernandes’ injury came after two powerful tackles from Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana.

Amorim hinted that Fernandes is most likely set to miss the Newcastle match at Old Trafford next Saturday, while Kobbie Mainoo is also out currently due to a calf injury he sustained in training.

“I will see what we’re going to do,” Amorim said. “I think Kobbie Mainoo is out and Bruno is out. So we will see. We are going to find solutions. No excuses. We need to win the next game and we will try to win the next game.”

Amorim added that the club may not make a panic buy in the January transfer market to compensate for the injury suffered by influential midfielder Fernandes, as it could prove to be a mistake.

“What we cannot do is to reach January and try to do everything in urgency and make mistakes and then [it’s] ‘here we go again’ with a lot of mistakes,” Amorim said. “I’m not going to get [together] with Jason and Omar and say: ‘We need a lot of players.’ Because we have a plan.

“If we have to suffer, the club comes first. Of course, we are in a moment where we need points but we need to find solutions and we are going to continue with our plan. You can feel in this moment that we are going to struggle, but we will see. We have to deal with it.”

Amorim: ‘Man United’s performance was good’

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach, Amorim, added that Man United were the better team in the match vs Aston Villa, but it would all be forgotten due to the defeat.

“I think we were the better team today. We were unlucky, even with the injury of Bruno, but, during the game, even without him, we were the better team. We blocked the transitions quite well and they did really well. We did a very good job that no-one is going to remember tomorrow because what matters is the result,” he said.

“I think we are improving in the last games. We have a lot of issues to solve, for all the problems we are dealing with lately, I think we did a very good job. Like the other matches, even when we win, I am always saying let’s not just focus on the result. It’s painful, of course, but focus on the performance and the performance was good. So we need to continue that and take it for the next game.”
