Arsenal have already begun making moves in the transfer market before the summer window even gets underway, signalling their intent to gun for the Premier League title next year after a hat-trick of second-place finishes, including in the ongoing season. ‘The Gunners’ secured their third consecutive second-place finish in the English top-flight with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday with midfielder Declan Rice starring in yet another Arsenal victory with a screamer.
According to Daily Mirror, Arsenal’s side have already agreed to a £58.9 million deal with Sporting Lisbon to sign their Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, who had been on top of manager Mikel Arteta’s wishlist for the summer.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, carried an image of Gyokeres celebrating Sporting’s triumph in the 2024-25 Liga Portugal season with a headline “Swede on his way to Arsenal”. The report adds that it’s only a matter of time before the transfer is made official.
Gyokeres, however, remained mum on his future while being asked about his future in the Portuguese top division.
“I’m still here. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Nobody can predict the future,” Gyokeres said following Sporting’s 2-0 victory over Vitoria SC on Saturday that allowed them to pip rivals Benfica to the title.
Man United closing in on Cunha
Gyokeres, who has made 26 appearances for Sweden, was also linked to a move to Manchester United, the team that is currently led by former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim.
However, with the Swede expected to be donning Arsenal’s red and white home kit in the following season, the ‘Red Devils’ have reportedly focused their attention on Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha – who has been with Wolverhampton Wanderers since 2023 after spending two seasons with Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal were eyeing Cunha during the January transfer window before the 25-year-old signed a new deal with the Wolves.

According to Italian sports journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Cunha is on the verge of joining United in a deal that is believed to be worth £62.5 million.
Arsenal had reportedly tried to interfere in Cunha’s move to Old Trafford but the Brazilian appears to have made up his mind on playing under Amorim next season, even if the 20-time English top-flight champions go through an entire season without any form of European football.
