Quinton de Kock scored two centuries in as many games against India in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa — fulfilling the potential that saw his country rate him so highly.
Here are five things you need to know about South Africa’s baby-faced assassin
- The 20-year-old wicket-keeper batsman from Gauteng went to the same school as Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie and was immediately touted for success in the game.
- And hasn’t he justified all the excitement surrounding him? De Kock also finds himself catching up to a fine statistic — the most ODI 100s before turning 21. Paul Stirling from Ireland has the most (4) followed by Shahriar Nafees, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Shahzad and De Kock (all with three).
- De Kock, unlike his schoolmate Graeme Smith, hasn’t shown too many attributes to skipper a side. He captained the South Africa Under-19 team for a while before being released of the pressures so that his batting could flourish.
- De Kock has shown why the U-19 World Cup is such a fine marker for future stars. In the 2012 edition, he was the team’s best batsman with 284 runs in six matches at an average of 48.33.
- He hasn’t broken into the Test team yet, but De Kock has done well in T20 competition. In the 2012 CLT20 held in South Africa, he scored 51 not-out in a match-winning partnership with McKenzie for the Highveld Lions against Mumbai Indians. Hyderabad Sunrisers signed him at the 2013 IPL Player Auction for a base price of $20,000.
