England colts completed a remarkable turnaround against Spain to win their maiden FIFA Under-17 World Cup title at the iconic Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.
Sergio Gomez gave Spain the lead in the 10th minute and doubled the team’s lead in the 31st minute.
The Young Lions, however, didn’t lose faith as Rhian Brewster scored his eighth goal of the tournament just before half-time. Spain went into the break with a one-goal advantage. But if there were any doubts over England’s performance in the first half, they were all put to bed in the final 45 minutes of the tie.
Morgan Gibbs-White, Phil Foden (twice) and Marc Guehi all got their names on the scoresheet culminating in a 5-2 scoreline that saw the game off and clinched the World Cup for England in front of a packed stadium. England’s victory on Saturday adds to their U-20 World Cup and U-19 Euro crowns in 2017, which has turned out to be a fairytale year for them in youth football. It was also a sweet revenge for England who had gone down to Spain in the U-17 Euro in May.
