FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017: Turkey's Ahmed Kutucu 'proud' after scoring tournament's first goal

Mumbai: He surged without fear, he fought and he scored. Turkey’s 17-year-old Ahmed Kutucu stood tall against New Zealand’s well-built defenders to net the first goal of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 in India. It was a moment to savour for the FC Schalke teenager as he broke the deadlock with a thumping header in the 18th minute to give his side the much-deserved lead. Kutucu rose and managed to get past the defender to head brilliantly from the corner kick. The Turkish forward duo of Kutucu and Malik Karaahmet received splendid support from midfielders Kerem Kesgin and Atalay Babacan, who arguably were the backbone of the Turkey midfield. Getty Images[/caption] Kutucu, who is one of the star attractions of the tournament, spoke to Firstpost after Turkey’s 1-1 draw against New Zealand. “It’s a very important moment for me personally. It’s a proud feeling that I scored the first goal of the tournament in my first official game.” Despite netting once, Kutucu said that he wanted to score more for his side. “If we could score one more, then it would have made more difference in the game,” he said. Turkey, who made their third appearance in the tournament, showed greater skills in the first half and their quick passing game unsettled the Kiwis as unseasonal rains welcomed both the sides. Ahead of the lung-opener, a lot was spoken about the physical side of the Kiwis and that it would hinder Turkey from creating chances. However, the young Turks responded well with their technical gameplay. “They have much more physical capabilities, but we are very skilful. We wanted to press the ball and play quick passes, that’s how we wanted to make the difference against New Zealand. With our techique and skills,” he added. Kutucu is among the four players in the Turkish squad for the FIFA U-17 World Cup who ply their trade in Germany’s Bundesliga. Turkey play Mali next, on 9 October, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
