Margao: Low online ticket sales in Goa has prompted the Local Organising Committee of the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup to install ticket counters near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
"The response from the Goans for the sale of online tickets from among the six different venues is the lowest, the reason is that the Goans are not used to booking tickets online.
"We have understood that the different U-17 World Cup venues in India have different purchasing patterns. Hence, closer to the tournament we will be installing physical ticket sales system near Fatorda stadium for the convenience of the football crazy fans in Goa," tournament director Javier Ceppi said on Wednesday.
The Under-17 World Cup kicks off on 6 October with India taking on the United States in New Delhi.
"Not many people in the country will get a chance to boast about witnessing Germany and Brazil live in a FIFA World Cup game in India. We are confident that the fans in Goa will march to the stadium in massive numbers when they look at the teams and players coming down to play at the venue, such as Vinicius Junior who is tipped to be the new Neymar," added Ceppi.
While the ticket sales in Goa have not matched the expectations and the reputation of football loving state, the region's traditional affinity for the beautiful game and the fantastic line up of games featuring the likes of Germany, Brazil, Iran, Costa Rica, Guinea and Niger bodes well for the venue that will also host one of the quarter-finals of the tournament.
"Everybody in Goa is aware that the state is hosting India's first FIFA tournament. We urge people whoever has the capacity and access to book tickets online should waste no time to be sure that they will be a part of the history.
"Physical ticket sales are usually on first come first serve basis and the huge crowds lining up at the stalls might not present the fans an opportunity to get their favourite seat during the games," Ceppi concluded.
The first match in Goa is on 7 October with Germany taking on Costa Rica followed by Iran locking horns with Guinea.
The tournament is scheduled to be held between 6th and 28th October. Tickets for the tournament can be booked on www.fifa.com/india2017/ticketing.
