FINAL GROUPS!

July 7, 2017, 20:09:04 (IST)
Tim Weah, son of the legendary footballer George Weah, will be featuring for the USA when the U17 World Cup takes place in India. NOTABLY, George won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year while with AC Milan in 1995 although he spent the first half of the year with Paris Saint-Germain. In 1996, Weah finished second to Brazilian legend Ronaldo, keeping him from earning consecutive honours. He was also the first African player to win both awards. In the following year, George was named the African Player of the Century and was given FIFA’s Fair Play Award. So, all eyes will be on Tim and it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the pressure in India.

Many of Ghana’s matches before they sealed qualification for the World Cup were goal fests, be it their 6-5 victory over Burkina Faso over two legs in the second round of qualification or the 4-0 win over Cameroon and the 5-0 thumping of Gabon in the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations. While they were the first team to seal qualification for the World Cup from Africa, they lost to Mali in the final.

Also in India’s group are Ghana, who went on an incredible run in the 1990s, making it to the final in four editions of five. Twice, in 1991 and 1995, they went on to clinch the title. However, since that phase where they also had a third place finish, they have made it to the World Cup itself on just two occasions. Many of Ghana’s matches before they sealed qualification for the World Cup this time around were goal fests, be it their 6-5 victory over Burkina Faso over two legs in the second round of qualification or the 4-0 win over Cameroon and the 5-0 thumping of Gabon in the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations. While they were the first team to seal qualification for the World Cup from Africa, they lost to Mali in the final.

Colombia have not made it to an U-17 World Cup since 2009. This time around, Colombia sealed their entry in dramatic style – with a 2-1 win over the Paraguayans in the last group match.

Having previously made it to the FIFA U-17 World Cup on five occasions, Colombia’s best finish came in Finland 2003 and Nigeria 2009, when they finished third.

They finished third at this year’s South American U-17 Championship with two victories, a draw and a defeat seeing them go into the hexagonal final phase as the second placed team from Group A. There, they beat Ecuador 2-1 and held Venezuela. However, a 0-1 defeat to Chile and a 0-3 blanking at the hands of Brazil proved to be their undoing.

The USA despite having a  strong team lost to Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in a penalty shootout. However, they will consider themselves unlucky. After all, they had stunned Mexico 4-3 in the group stage, thereby bringing the El Tri’s 25-match unbeaten streak in the competition to a grinding halt.

India have USA in their group. USA, remember, have competed in 15 World Cups before this. However, their best finish has been a 4th place in 1999. They have also had four quarter-final finishes. After exiting in the group stage itself last time around, the Americans will be particularly keen to impose themselves in India.

Praful Patel makes a massive mistake: Claims India had qualified for the 1958 World Cup. In reality, it was the 1950 World Cup. The mistake gets even more glaring when you realise that he is the head of the All India Football Federation.

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri will be at the event today. Stay tuned to here from him about India’s group later in the evening.

Preview World football’s governing body FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) on Wednesday announced the participation of former Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso and Nigerian forward Nwankwo Kanu along with Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri and country’s top-ranked badminton player PV Sindhu at the official draw for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Kanu won Olympic gold in 1996, was twice chosen as African Player of the Year, and played for Nigeria at the 1998, 2002 and 2010 editions of the World Cup. Cambiasso, meanwhile, won the FIFA U-20 World Cup 1997 and was part of Argentina’s team at the 2010 World Cup. “The FIFA U-17 World Cup 1993 really spurred my career - within years of winning the title, I won the Olympic gold and from there as I would like to believe, there wasn’t any looking back. This tournament provides youngsters the necessary stage for development and I believe this year’s edition will provide us all with exceptional talent – much like the previous tournaments,” Kanu said. The draw is on Friday while the World Cup, taking place in India for the first time, will be held from 6-28 October.   With inputs from IANS
