FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017, Germany vs Guinea, Football Match Result: Fiete Arp's brace gives Germany victory
  • 19:02 (IST)

So Iran and Germany advance to the Round of 16 from Group C. Iran will take on the best third-placed team from either of Groups A, B or F in Goa on Tuesday while Germany will face Colombia in New Delhi on Monday.

That's it from us here in Kochi. We will be back with all the live updates from the match between Brazil and Niger in Goa. Be right back!

  • Full-time. Germany seal a 3-1 victory. The players go acknowledge the crowd, who have been rooting for Guinea. The African team put on a gutsy display tonight, but unfortunately will be taking the flight back home.

  • Full time! Guinea 1-3 Germany. Germany qualify for the Round fo 16

Four minutes of added time. And a penalty to Germany after Sekou Camara brings down Jessic Ngankam. Sahverdi Cetin tucks in the ball into the goal and that should be the final nail in the coffin for Guinea.
Elsewhere in Goa, Iran have scored their third goal.

  • 18:52 (IST)

90` GOAL! Fiete Arp scores from the penalty spot! Guinea 1-3 Germany

Four minutes have been added on by the referee. Four minutes for Guinea to get an equaliser and possibly a winner to extend their stay and their day goes from bad to worse. Sekou Camara trips Jessic Ngankam and Germany win a penalty. Fiete Arp steps up and sends Mohamed Camara the wrong way. Germany are minutes away from qualifying for the next round.

  • 84` Guinea 1-2 Germany

Jann-Fiete Arp misses a sitter. With just the goalkeeper to beat and a defender and a teammate running beside him, he pushes his shot wide.

  • 80` Guinea 1-2 Germany

Guinea 'keeper Camara pulls off two more saves. The second one, to keep out Nicolas Kuehn's shot, was a spectacular one. With 10 minutes to go, there's still hope for the African team. Remember, a draw would not do for them.

  • 18:39 (IST)

    78` Guinea 1-2 Germany

The Guinea players call for a handball inside the penalty box after a shot appears to hit Yann Bisseck's hand but the referee waves it away. Good decision from the referee there. The arm was close to Bisseck's body.

  • 75` Guinea 1-2 Germany

The players take a water break. The humidity has been too much to bear for many teams, even the African ones, who say they are used to the heat but not the humidity.

  • Meanwhile, here are the stats from the first half. Interesting that Guinea dominated possession.

  • Germany take the lead again, thanks to Nicolas Kuehn. The forward received the ball with the goalkeeper in front and a defender advancing on him. But he kept his calm and coolly finished that one. Pressure on Guinea now.

  • 18:24 (IST)

62` GOAL! Nicolas Kuehn gives Germany the lead! Guinea 1-2 Germany

Brilliant ball from Arp and an equally brilliant finish from Kuehn. He dummies to send Mohamed Camara one way and shifts the ball to his left leg and calmly slots it into the net.

  • 18:21 (IST)

    60` Guinea 1-1 Germany

Dennis Jastrzembski gets himself booked for a retaliatory foul on Ibrahima Soumah and he's promptly replaced by Jessic Ngankam.

  • 18:13 (IST)

    52` Guinea 1-1 Germany

Ibrahima Soumah with a vital intervention on his goalline. With Mohamed Camara beaten, Soumah is on hand to head it clear from Arp.

  • 47` Guinea 1-1 Germany

And we're off in the second half with Guinea's Mohamed Camara making two back-to-back saves to keep Germany out. The expression on coach Christian Wueck's face reveals it all. They need this win desperately, even if a draw will get them through.

  • 18:08 (IST)

    The second half gets underway!

And we're off in the second half in Kochi and Guinea almost take the lead. Aguibo flicks it on into the path of Fandje Toure but it's just a bit too far for the Guinea captain. At the other end, Mohamed Camara produces a fantastic save from Nicholas Kuhn. After palming away a shot from Abouchabaka, Camara gets a fingertip on Kuhn's volley which was destined to go into the net.

  • Half-time at Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. 1-1. As things stand, Guinea will be in third place after three matches with two points while Germany will definitely go through with four points. A draw will not be good enough for the African nation to make it to the round of 16. In the other match at Goa, Iran are cruising 2-0 against Costa Rica.

  • 17:51 (IST)

    Halftime! Guinea 1-1 Germany

It's level pegging at halftime as Ibrahima Soumah equalised for Guinea through a well-taken goal after Jann-Fiete Arp had given Germany the lead.

In Goa, Iran are 2-0 up and well on their way of winning the group.

  • 45+1` Guinea 1-1 Germany

The Guinea team survive another onslaught by the skin of their teeth. Keeper Mohamed Kamara saves a shot from Jann-Fiete Arp as three minutes are added on in this half.

  • 17:48 (IST)

    45` Guinea 1-1 Germany

Cherif Camara goes down in the Guinean box clutching the side of his abdomen. Play resumes as he's taken to the side for treatment. Dennis Jastrzembski shoots from the edge of the box but it is saved well by Camara but the assistant had already flagged if offside.

  • 17:39 (IST)

    36` Guinea 1-1 Germany

Lars Mai goes in the referee's book for a careless foul. He had earlier escaped without sanction but this time he gets booked. Germany are going hard into tackles compared to Guinea who are defending more through clever positional play and interceptions.

  • 17:35 (IST)

    30` Guinea 1-1 Germany

The referee calls for a cooling break but things are heating up in Goa where Iran are playing against Costa Rica. After hammering the Germans 4-0 in their last match, the Iranians are 2-0 up against Costa Rica. As things stand, Iran will progress as Group C winners with Germany in second with four points.

  • 29` Guinea 1-1 Germany

Scrappy, but they all count. Guinea are level after Ibrahima Soumah puts the ball in the net. Just a minute or so ago, he had blasted his shot over the bar. The Kochi crowd (and the press box here) love an underdog. The whole stadium erupted when that goal was scored. A fair bit of thumping of the tables in the press box too.

  • 17:28 (IST)

25` GOAL! Ibrahima Soumah scores! Guinea 1-1 Germany

Minutes after his shot went inches above the bar, Soumah nets Guinea's equaliser. After a couple of Guinean shots are blocked, Soumah pounces on the loose ball and fires it into the goal.

  • 20` Guinea 0-1 Germany

Traore makes up for his mistake by putting in a last-ditch tackle on Arp, who could have made it two goals. So far, Germany have looked threatening while Guinea have been decent till the last third, where the final ball has been lacking.

  • 17:19 (IST)

    19` Guinea 0-1 Germany

Lars Mai with a reckless challenge on the Guinea No 9 Doss Soumah. He's lucky to escape without a yellow and the resultant free kick is deflected off the wall.

  • 17:17 (IST)

    15` Guinea 0-1 Germany

Guinea's goalkeeper Mohamed Camara looks to play it out from the back but his pass is a misplaced one and they concede a silly throw in. Their coach Souleymane Camara furious with his defence for making a meal of a simple goal kick.

  • 9` Guinea 0-1 Germany

And Germany have opened the scoring, thanks to Jann-Fiete Arp being at the right place at the right time. Ismael Traore's clearance took a deflection and landed at the German captain's feet. He coolly slotted it past the 'keeper. Not surprising, considering that the Europeans had been doing all the early attacking. They have been jolted by the 0-4 defeat to Iran and will be keen to prove their credentials. A defeat today could be fatal for their hopes of winning the title.

  • 17:10 (IST)

8` GOAL! Arp gives Germany the lead! Guinea 0-1 Germany

Some dreadful defending from Guinea gives Germany the lead. Dennis Jastrzembski closes down on a clearance from a Guinean defender and the ball rebounds off his legs into the path of Arp who takes his time to put the ball past the Guinean goalkeeper.

  • 17:01 (IST)

    Kick off! Guinea 0-0 Germany

The teams are out on the pitch and after the rendition of the national anthems, Germany get us underway. 32 seconds in and Arp wins a free-kick right on the edge of the box and there's a booking for Ismael Traore. The free-kick is blocked by the wall and Guinea win possession.

  • 16:59 (IST)

This how things stand in Group C. Germany will qualify for the next round if they win today irrespective of what happens in the other match between Iran and Costa Rica. Guinea need to win and hope that Iran also beat Costa Rica for the African side to qualify.

  • Really sparse crowd in the stands today at Kochi. Not surprising, considering favourites Brazil are playing their match in Goa. Whatever fans have turned up, gave the Guinea team a raucous applause when they came on the pitch.

  • 16:30 (IST)

  • 16:10 (IST)

    The lineups are out!

Germany coach Christian Wueck has made a host of changes for today's match with as many as 5 players who featured in the 4-0 loss to Iran finding themselves on the bench. Jan Boller, Noah Awuku, Sahverdi Cetin, Eric Majetschak & John Yeboah have been benched today.

For Guinea, coach Souleymane Camara has opted to bring in Cherif Camara and Doss Soumah in place of Issiaga Camara and Naby Bangoura.

Preview: Heavyweights Germany will look to bounce back and seal a spot in the knock-out stage against Guinea in a Group C fixture of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on Friday.

The Germans, who were thrashed 4-0 by Iran on Tuesday, will aim to regroup and solidify their defensive organisation in their last group stage fixture.

On the other hand, Guinea, who are fourth in Group C, will look to utilise their final chance in the group stage to clinch victory and remain in contention of qualifying for the knock-outs.

A victory for Germany will mean a confirmed spot in the Round-of-16, while a draw will mean the Europeans will rely on Costa Rica's loss to earn themselves a direct qualification.

Guinea, however, will expect Costa Rica to register a loss in their last fixture, in order to have any chance to qualify as the third team from Group C.

Germany — who have plenty of attacking options will hope their defence does not let them down like it did during their last outing against Iran.

Jann-Fiete Arp, the highly-rated striker from Hamburg, who failed to find enough touches on the ball in the last match will look to be the lethal player, finding finishes and assists against Guinea.

Guinea will largely depend on Fondje Toure to help them find the back of the net. Toure, who has found the goal on two out of two occasions, will aim to continue his good form.

The Guinea trio of Toure, Seydouba Cisse and Naby Bangoura, who combined well on the attack in their last match against Costa Rica, will look to be the lethal elements for the side against the German back-line.
