Chess World Cup: After D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi too knocked out in third round

Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi has been knocked out from the Chess World Cup and now only five Indians remain in fray after three rounds.

Chess World Cup: After D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi too knocked out in third round

Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi has been knocked out of the ongoing FIDE World Cup as he faced defeat at the hands of Sam Shankland of the United States in the second set of tie-break games of third round in Panjim, Goa on Sunday.

Gujrathi lost 2.5-3.5 to Shankland in the tiebreaker. He is the third high-profile Indian to be knocked out of the World Cup after D Gukesh and Aravindh Chithambaram too faced early exits. Gukesh lost to Frederic Svane of Germany in the third round while Chithambaram crashed out in the second round.

SL Narayanan was also beaten by Yangyi Yu of China in the first set of tie-break games while V Karthik continued with his dream run and defeated Deac Bogdan-Daniel of Romania 1.5-0.5. The win helped Karthik seal a fourth-round spot.

Karthik is the fifth Indian to advance to the fourth round. Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, P Harikrishna and world junior champion V Pranav have already qualified for Round 4.

206 Indians had participated in the World Cup but only five now remain in contention for the title.

The top three from the World Cup will qualify for the Candidates tournament.
