It is still only the middle of the January transfer window, but the dealings that clubs have made show that strikers are surely the most-wanted players in winter. The big teams may not have really made huge signings, with Gary Cahill’s move to Chelsea the most prominent. Arsenal and Manchester United have in fact gone for the smart move of recalling Theirry Henry and Paul Scholes into the fold, which will give their teams a mental lift as well as aditional bench strength. Newcastle’s signing of Papiss Cisse is what is really exciting. The Senegalese striker had an amazing year last campaign and has also found the net nine times this year for his ex-club Freiburg. Alan Pardew must really have faith in him to give him the no.9 shirt, vacated by Andy Carroll and formerly worn by Alan Shearer. The American player, who plays alongside David Beckham for the LA Galaxy has impressed in earlier spells like these and will give the Blues much needed fire-power up front. Couple this with Louis Saha’s strength and the return of Victor Anichebe in the fold and Everton look pretty decent up front. Darren Gibson, the Manchester United midfielder, also made a permanent move to Everton and David Moyes’ swift action will ensure Everton don’t end up on the wrong side of the table. Another striker who has moved is Robbie Keane, who comes on loan to Aston Villa from Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy. He knows what it takes to succeed in the English game and has hit the net enough times to prove it. Seeing him play next to Darren Bent will make the Villa fans hungry for more goals. Meanwhile, promising Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran has moved on loan to Swansea, who have been in some solid form, most recently beating Arsenal 3-2. With quite some days still to go in the market, which includes the frantic deadline day, one must surely expect some shrewd deals to go through.
Here are the January transfer market signings up till now.
