England v India, fifth Test as it happened: England dominate India on day 1

Battered and bruised in the last two matches, it will be a test of character for India’s underperforming players as they go into the fifth and final Test against England here tomorrow, hoping to restore their pride and level the series.

Dhoni fought a lone battle for India as he eked out 82 runs out of the 148. Cook and Robson then started off cautiously and then got into the groove as they added 62 unbeaten runs. Cook is lucky to be out in the middle as an LBW appeal was turned down against him off Bhuvneshwar. Replays showed that it would have hit the stumps. India need to bounce back hard early tomorrow. England already in a strong position on day 1! Over 19: England 62/0, Cook 24*, Robson 33* A good final over of the day from Aaron. Robson gets an inside edge which flies inches past the leg stump for a boundary off the first delivery of the over. Robson then makes sure he sees through the rest of the over cautiously to end the day’s play! Over 18: England 58/0, Cook 24*, Robson 29* Good stuff from Binny. He is bowling at a decent pace. He induces an outside edge off Cook off the third delivery but it flies wide of the slip cordon for a streaky boundary. Ends the over with a nice probing delivery outside off. Binny continues…… Over 17: England 54/0, Cook 20*, Robson 29* Cook tucks one to square leg for a single. Aaron then tumbles on hos followthrough in his next delivery as there are some problem with the landing area. Thankfully for India he is fine. Aaron then drifts one down the leg side, Robson misses his flick, they all go up in a big appeal for a caught behind but the umpire says no. Looked like it flicked the shirt. Robson then clips one to backward square leg for a couple. 3 runs off the over. Over 16: England 51/0, Cook 19*, Robson 27*: Cook drives one wide of mid on for a couple. Binny then bowls a couple of good probing deliveries to Cook. The England skipper takes a single to deep square leg off the last delivery of the over. Binny into the attack now…… Over 15: England 48/0, Cook 16*, Robson 27* Not a good start from Aaron, doesn’t get his lengths right. At first overpitches to Cook who flicks it through mid-wicket for three. He then overpitches to Robson who drives it crisply through covers for a boundary. 7 runs off the over. Finally, Varun Aaron into the attack now……… Over 14: England 39/0, Cook 13*, Robson 23* 2 runs off the over. Robson looked to turn one to the leg side but gets a leading edge wide of slip cordon for a couple. Over 13: England 39/0, Cook 13*, Robson 21* Robson growing in confidence. Drives an overpitched delivery from Bhuvneshwar wide of mid off for a boundary. Bhuvneshwar then fluffs his line and drifts it wide down the leg side, Robson misses it, Dhoni too misses it and it runs away for four byes to fine leg. Robson then turns one to mid-wicket for a single. Over 12: England 24/0, Cook 13*, Robson 16* Cook pulls a short delivery on off to fine leg for a single. Ishant then bowls a lovely outswinger, Robson looks to push but gets an outside edge which flies wide of the third slip for a streaky boundary. Over 11: England 24/0, Cook 12*, Robson 11* After 5 good deliveries, Bhuvneshwar overpitches one outside off, Robson comes forward and drives it wide of mid off for a boundary. Over 10: England 20/0, Cook 12*, Robson 7* Cook defends the first delivery and then leaves one. The third one jags back in sharply, Cook misses his clip and gets hit in the box region. He is in some pain! Cook then makes sure he doesn’t miss any as he is rock solid in defense. A maiden over. Over 9: England 20/0, Cook 12*, Robson 7* Cook flicks the first delivery through mid-wicket for a nicely timed boundary. A huge LBW appeal is turned down against Cook. It pitches on middle and leg and was angling away. Cook looks to play across the line but misses. Replays showed that it pitched in line and was hitting the stumps. A tad full on middle, tailing back in. Cook stays in his crease and looks to flick but misses. The umpire turns down the LBW appeal. Replays show that it was clipping leg - Onfield call! Over 3: England 3/0, Cook 1*, Robson 2* Robson looked confident with his shot selection in that over. He leaves the first three deliveries, then drives one straight to covers. After another leave, he punches one straight to point. Over 2: England 3/0, Cook 1*, Robson 2* India had a scare as Ishant pulled up after the second delivery but he seemed OK after a few minutes. He got the landing area repaired. Robson clips one to mid-wicket for a single. Cook then defends one solidly and then leaves the last one alone. Ishant Sharma will share the new ball…….. He slips the first delivery wide down the leg side but then bowls a nice probing delivery outside off next up, Cook leaves it alone. He then brings one back in sharply, Cook is cramped for room and get gets an inside edge on his defense which falls short of the short leg fielder. Cook the flicks one behind square leg for a single to get off the mark. Robson too gets off the mark in the first over with a clip behind square leg for a single. Right! Anderson then darts one in Ishant’s rib region the lanky Indian pacer fends it away and it flies just wide of the short leg fielder. Dhni then lofts one over mid on for a boundary. He looks to flick one off the final delivery but gets a leading edge to covers. Over 58: India 131/9, Dhoni 69*, Ishant 4* After three tight deliveries, Broad induces an outside edge off Ishant but it falls short of the third slip fielder. Ishant then flicks one through mid-wicket for a couple and then leaves the final ball alone. Stuart Broad will bowl from the other end….. Over 57: India 129/9, Dhoni 69*, Ishant 2* Dhoni tucks the first ball to the leg side but then is beaten by a sharp inswinger as he is cut into half. Dhoni then leaves one outside off but misses his pull off the next delivery. He then looks to clear mid off but gets an outside edge which flies over the slip cordon for a lucky boundary. Right back after tea….. Anderson will start off proceedings for England. Tea, day 1: India 125/9. 82 runs were scored for the loss of 4 wickets in the session. Dhoni fighting a lone battle with 65*. The last wicket partnership has frustrated England and they would be looking to wrap it up as soon as possible after the break. He then defends the next four before heaving one over mid-wicket off the final delivery before tea to take the single. Moeen Ali into the attack now. This might be the last over before tea. Over 50: India 103/9, Dhoni 43*, Ishant 2* Dhoni nudges it to the leg side but turns down the single. He then mistimes his pull over mid-wicket for three. There is a big shout for an LBW against Ishant but there is an inside edge hence the umpire turns it down. Over 49: India 100/9, Dhoni 40*, Ishant 2* A good mix of short and full deliveries from Jordan. The first delivery beats Ishant’s outside edge. Ishant then does well to defend the short deliveries. A maiden over. Over 48: India 100/9, Dhoni 40*, Ishant 2* Short of a good length delivery on off, Ishant is caught in two minds, he looks to take his bat away at the last moment but the ball takes the face of the bat and flies to second slip where Bell fluffs it. Ishant then clips it to mid-wicket for a single. Dhoni then looks to slash one outside off but gets an outside edge over gully for a boundary. 100 up for India. Over 47: India 95/9, Dhoni 36*, Ishant 1* Woakes beats Ishant with a lovely outswinger. England then miss a run out as Ishant tucks one to mid-wicket and sets off for a suicidal single. Broad misses his shy at the non-striker’s end as Ishant Sharma gives up. Dhoni then goes for a wild swing across the line but misses. Woakes slips the last delivery of the over down the leg side. Dhoni misses his clip. Over 46: India 94/9, Dhoni 36*, Ishant 0* Dhoni chases a wide one and looks to go over the top but seems to miss it. There is a noise as the ball passes the bat. But the England players don’t appeal. Dhoni then mistimes his pull behind square leg but turns down the run. He then guides one through gully for a boundary. Surprisingly, he leaves the last delivery alone not going for the strike in the next over. Over 45: India 90/9, Dhoni 32*, Ishant 0* A wicket maiden from Woakes. He’s bowled really well today. Ishant Sharma is the new batsman. OUT! Woakes picks up his 3rd wicket. VR Aaron c & b Woakes 1 (17b 0x4 0x6) Short on the body from Woakes, Aaron looks to fend it away but gets a leading edge which pops up in the air, Woakes runs forward on his followthrough and pouches a simple catch. Over 44: India 90/8, Dhoni 32*, Aaron 1* Aaron pushes it to covers to finally get off the mark. Dhoni then cuts one powerfully through point for a boundary. But then gets beaten by a jaffa from Jordan off the last delivery of the over. Over 43: India 83/8, Dhoni 26*, Aaron 0* Dhoni pretty cautious in that over. A maiden from Woakes. Over 42: India 83/8, Dhoni 26*, Aaron 0* Aaron looks to cut one off a short and wide delivery off the second delivery but misses. The England players go up in an appeal but the umpire remains unmoved. Jordan then beats Aaron with a beauty and it flies over the stumps. Aaron then looks to drive away from the body off the last ball but misses. Aaron looks all at sea here. Over 41: India 83/8, Dhoni 26*, Aaron 0* Dhoni fighting a lone battle here. Defends first four deliveries and then spanks a cut off the penultimate delivery for a boundary. Over 40: India 79/8, Dhoni 22*, Aaron 0* Jordan delivers a bouncer off the last delivery of the over, Aaron looks to fend away but gets hit on the arm. A wicket maiden. Varun Aaron is the new batsman…… OUT! Poor, poor shot from Bhuvneshwar. B Kumar c Buttler b Jordan 5 (11b, 1x4, 0x6) Wide outside off, Bhuvneshwar chases it for a slash but ends up getting the toe end of the bat. The keeper makes no mistake. The Indians are losing it completely. Even Bhuvneshwar who had shown a lot of application early in the series is playing poor shots. Over 39: 79/7, Dhoni 22*, Bhuvneshwar 5* Overpitched from Stokes and Dhoni cracks it through covers for his fourth boundary of the innings. He then tucks one behind square for a single. Off the last delivery of the over, Woakes brings one back in sharply, Bhuvneshwar somehow gets bat on to it, gets an inside edge to the leg side for a single. Over 38: India 73/7, Dhoni 17*, Bhuvneshwar 4* Bhuvneshwar going for his shots it seems. Broad offers width and Bhuvneshwar slashes but only gets an outside edge over the slip cordon for a streaky boundary. 5 runs off the over. Over 37: India 68/7, Dhoni 17*, Bhuvneshwar 0* Good over from Woakes. he’s been impressive so far. He beats Ashwin with an outswinger off the first ball and then induces an outside edge off the third to scalp his wicket. Bhuvneshwar tries to drive the first ball he faces but is beaten by the away movement. A wicket maiden. OUT! Woakes removes Ashwin. R Ashwin c Root b Woakes 13 (17b 1x4 0x6) Good length delivery on off, tailing away. Ashwin pushes at it away from the body and gets an outside edge to gully where Root dives forward to pouch a very good low catch. The umpire goes upstairs to check whether the catch was clean and the third umpire believes it is good enough. Over 36: India 68/6, Dhoni 17*, Ashwin 13* Ashwin tries to chase a wide one outside off for a drive but misses. He then connects one and takes a couple through covers before pushing one to the same region for a single. 3 runs off the over. Over 35: India 65/6, Dhoni 17*, Ashwin 10* Dhoni is looking uncomfortable against Anderson’s inswingers. He gets an inside edge to fine leg for a single. Ashwin then drives a full length delivery wide of mid on for three. 4 runs off the over. Over 34: India 61/6, Dhoni 16*, Ashwin 7* Dhoni drives one to mid off where Jordan misfields to allow them a single. Ashwin then looks to drive on the up off the penultimate delivery but misses. Over 33: India 60/6, Dhoni 15*, Ashwin 7* Ashwin drives a full delivery outside point through point for three. Dhoni then looks to drive one but gets an inside edge onto his pads. Anderson then induces an outside edge off Dhoni but it’s played with soft hands and it falls short of the slip cordon. They run through for a single. The England pacer again delivers a perfect outswinger to beat Ashwins bat to end the over. Over 32: India 56/6, Dhoni 14*, Ashwin 4* Dhoni finally getting a move on. He set Binny up nicely. Delivered a vicious inswinger at first which Binny somehow defended into the ground. He then beat Binny’s outside edge with an outswinger and then had him caught at first slip off the third ball. He nearly had Ashwin with another vicious inswinger, Ashwin got an inside edge which flew inches wide of the leg stump. Terrific stuff…… Ravichandran Ashwin is the new batsman…. OUT! Binny is back in the hut. S Binny c Cook b Anderson 5 (30b, 0x4, 0x6) Anderson at his best. A tad full on off, tailing away. Binny comes half forward for a prod but is squared up and gets an outside edge to first slip where Cook accepts it calmly. Over 30: India 44/5, Binny 5*, Dhoni 6* After a couple of left-alones, Dhoni looks to drive a full delivery on off but gets an inside edge onto his pads. Broad then beats him with an absolute beauty that nips away with extra bounce. Broad then brings on back from short of a length and Dhoni takes a blow on his chest. The Indian skipper looked uncomfortable in that over! Another maiden! Over 29: India 44/5, Binny 5*, Dhoni 6* Anderson is bowling beautfully. He delivers a jaffa off the first ball off the over. Binny plays and misses. Then again beats him with an outswinger. Binny then tries to poke at one and misses and then off the fifth delivery he is again beaten by a lovely outswinger. A maiden over but very good stuff from Anderson. Over 28: India 44/5, Binny 5*, Dhoni 6* After a wayward first delivery, Broad pitches one up outide off, it swings away. Binny goes for an expansive drive but misses. Binny then mistimes his clip to the leg side for a single. Dhoni leaves alone a couple of probing deliveries outside off. India have scored just 2 boundaries after 27 overs. Over 27: India 43/5, Binny 4*, Dhoni 6* After four outswingers, Anderson brings one back in. Dhoni is cramped for room and misses his defense. A stifled LBW appeal is turned down. A good tight over from Anderson. Another maiden. Anderson will bowl from the other end…… Over 26: India 43/5, Binny 4*, Dhoni 6* A good first over from Broad. Binny is cautious off the first four balls but then has a waft at one wide outside off and misses. He then gets an inside edge onto his pads which falls short of the short leg fielder. Update: There were covers on during the lunch as there was slight drizzle in the air but now they are going off. The good news is that play will start on time after lunch and out come the players. At lunch on day 1: India 43/5. It’s the same old story as India lose another session. The England pacers were on the mark and they have made use of the overhead conditions along with a green pitch to good effect. Dhoni and Binny need to build a big partnership now. Over 25: India 43/5, Binny 4*, Dhoni 6* Dhoni edges one to fourth slip off an outswinger but it falls short. He makes sure that there are no more slip-ups as he blocks out rest of the deliveries to head into lunch on day 1. Over 24: India 43/5, Binny 4*, Dhoni 6* Binny drives one through covers for three off the first ball, Dhoni then tucks one to the leg side for a single. Jordan then bowls a couple of probing delivery and then induces an outside edge which falls short of the slip cordon. 4 runs off the over. Over 23: India 39/5, Binny 1*, Dhoni 5* Woakes has been impressive so far. Mixing his inswingers and outswingers nicely. Another maiden….. Over 22: India 39/5, Binny 1*, Dhoni 5* Jordan bowling well here. Induces an edge couple of times. Length delivery on off, tailing away. Binny pushes at one but gets an outside edge which falls short of the slip cordon. Jorden then delivers one very full on off, swinging away. Binny looks to drive but gets an outside edge which again falls short of the cordon. Over 21: India 38/5, Binny 1*, Dhoni 5* Binny clips one to fine leg for a single to get off the mark. Dhoni defends solidly and then turns it to fine leg for a single off the last delivery off the over. Over 20: India 36/5, Binny 0*, Dhoni 4* A good tight over from Jordan, a maiden. Over 19: India 36/5, Binny 0*, Dhoni 4* A very good over from Woakes. He beat Vijay with outswingers with a couple of deliveries first up. He then induces an outside edge which falls short of gully and then removes his man with one that tails away. A wicket maiden. OUT! It gets worse for India as Vijay departs. M Vijay c Root b Woakes 18 (64b, 0x4, 0x6) Good length delivery on off, nips away. Vijay stays in his crease and looks to defend but gets an outside edge to fourth slip where Root pouches a good low catch. Over 18: India 36/4, M Vijay 18*, MS Dhoni 4* Jordan guilty of fluffing his lines in that over. Vijay comfortable clips his off the pads. At first for a couple and then a single. Three runs off the over. Over 17: India 33/4 A brilliant over from Woakes. At first induces an outside edge off Dhoni and it flies through the slip cordon for a boundary and then off the very last ball beats him with a lovely outswinger. 5 runs off the over. Over 16: India 28/4 MS Dhoni is the new batsman….. OUT! Another one bites the dust: AM Rahane c & b Jordan 0 (8b, 0x4, 0x6) Full outside off, Rahane looks to drive but then checks his shot at the last moment. He ends up playing a loose drive, Jordan dives to his right and pouches a very good catch. Over 15: India 28/3 Good pace generated by Woakes in that over. He was a tad too short though. He darted on on Vijay’s body who tried to defend but got an outside edge just wide of gully for a couple. Chris Woakes into the attack now……. STAT: Virat Kohli’s scores so far in this series - 1,8,25,0,39,28,0,7,6. 114 runs from 9 inns at 12.66. Over 14: India 26/3 A very good first over from Jordan. It included the wicket of Kohli. A wicket maiden. OUT! Kohli fails again. V Kohli lbw b Jordan 6 (18b, 1x4, 0x6) Good length delivery outside off, nips back in sharply. Kohli doesn’t offer a shot. It jags back enough to hit his pads. They umpire lifts his finger on the appeal. Virat was shell shocked at the decision but replays showed that it was clipping off - Umpire’s call! First change of the morning. Chris Jordan into the attack…… Over 13: India 26/2 Anderson overpitches one outside off, Kohli cracks it through mid off for a boundary. That will give him a lot of confidence. Kohli then leaves another outswinger alone. Anderson then brings one back in sharply. Kohli is half forward, he looks to defend but gets an inside edge to the leg side for a single. Anderson then bowls a short one down the leg side, Buttler does well to make a very good stop with a dive. The England pacer then beats Vijay’s bat with a lovely outswinger. Over 12: India 21/2 Vijay looks to drive one through covers for gets an inside edge through mid-wicket for a couple. The rest are dots. Broad didn’t trouble the batsmen much in the over. Over 11: India 19/2 After a couple of outswingers, Anderson brings one back in sharply. Vijay looks to defend from the crease but gets an inside edge onto his pads. He then pushes one to point for a quick single. Kohli blocks one solidly off the first ball he faces off Anderson. The England bowler then drops one short outside off, Kohli pushes it away from the body and into the ground. That’s exactly what he doesn’t want to do. He is out most of the times playing that same shot. He needs to leave those alone. STAT: Kohli against Anderson in this series. Runs - 7 Balls faced - 30 Dismissed - 4 times. Over 10: India 18/2 Kohli finally gets off the mark off the 7th ball with a tame push to the covers. Vijay then tucks one to fine leg for a single. A couple of runs off the over. Over 9: Another good over from Anderson. He induces an outside edge off the second delivery but it’s played with soft hands and it falls short of the gully fielder. Then there is a length delivery which jags back in sharply, Vijay looks to defend off front foot but misses. A stifled appeal for an LBW is turned down as it hit him outside the line.
