Stumps, day 2: Another cracking day for England. Cook and Ballance laid the platform with a 125-run stand. Buttler and Root then put England into a strong position with a 80-run partnership. India just won one session today, that after lunch where they scalped 4 wickets. England are in a commanding position now and if India don’t bat well, we could well have another 3-day match! Over 105: England 382/7, Root 92*, Jordan 19* Root pushes one to gully for a single. Ashwin then bowls a beauty. It just zips away and beats Jordan’s outside edge. Jordan then clips one to deep square leg for a single. Root flicks the last ball of the over to deep square leg for a single to end the day’s play! Ashwin into the attack now. 104: England 382/7, Root 90*, Jordan 18* Root is playing some glorious shots. Low full toss on middle and leg, Root flicks it wide of mid on for a boundary. He then drives one straight back past the bowler for another boundary. He moves into the 90s with a single to deep point. The final delivery is frustrating for Binny as he produces an outside edge off Jordan and it falls short of Vijay at first slip. Vijay shows poor technique in stopping the bal and they take a couple. Over 103: England 371/7, Root 81*, Jordan 16* Aaron drops it short down the leg side, Root goes for a pull but seems to miss it. They all go up in a huge appeal for a caught behind but the umpire is unmoved. Root then drives one wide of mid off for a single. 1 run off the over. Over 102: England 370/7, Root 80*, Jordan 16* Runs coming thick and fast. Root guides one through the slip cordon for a boundary through third man. He then clips one to deep square leg for a single. Binny then induces an outside edge which flies between the 3rd and 4th slip for a streaky boundary. 9 runs off the over. Over 101: England 361/7, Root 75*, Jordan 12* Aaron brings one back in sharply of the first ball, Root is cramped for room and he misses his flick. They run through for a leg bye. Jordan then flicks one through mid-wicket for three. Root then guides one wide of the slip cordon for a boundary before clipping one to deep square leg for a single. 9 runs off the over. Over 100: England 352/7, Root 70*, Jordan 9* It’s been easy going for England. They are milking runs. 5 runs off the over. Stuart Binny into the attack now. Over 99: England 347/7, Root 68*, Jordan 7* After two leaves and a defense, Jordan gets a leg bye. Root then tries to pull a short delivery down the leg side but misses. Root then gets on top of the bounce and punches it through covers for a boundary. Varun Aaron into the attack now…. Over 98: England 342/7, Root 64*, Jordan 7* Runs coming thick and fast now. Root looks to punch one off the first delivery but gets an outside edge which falls short of the first slip, Vijay is lazy in getting down in time and it races away to the fence. Root then plays the shot of the day as he punches one through covers for consecutive boundaries. Root then pushes one to covers and takes a quick single. A direct hit hit allows them a second on the ricochet. Ishant then bowls a beauty as he cuts Root into half with one that jags back in. It flies over the stumps. Over 95: England 318/7, Root 47*, Jordan 0* Bhuvneshwar drops one short, Root goes for a pull but gets a top edge which sails over fine leg for a maximum. Root then drives one through covers for three. Woakes then departs off the next ball before Jordan leaves alone the last one. Chris Jordan is the new batsman. OUT! Strangled down the leg side. CR Woakes c Dhoni b Kumar 0 (3b 0x4 0x6) Full on the pads, Woakes looks to flick but gets a thin edge behind, Dhoni dives and pouches a good catch. Bhuvneshwar has an embarrassing smile. Over 94: England 309/6, Root 38*, Woakes 0* Ishant had a big LBW appeal turned down off the first delivery. It jagged back in sharply and Buttler missed his defense. The umpire turned down the appeal. Replays showed that it was clipping the top of the stumps. Buttler then defends one solidly before flicking one straight to mid-wicket. A wicket maiden. Woakes is the new batsman….. OUT! Ishant deserved a wicket. JC Buttler c Ashwin b Sharma 45 (73b 9x4 0x6) Nicely set up by Dhoni. Full and swinging in, Buttler whips one straight to short mid-wicket. They had that short mid-wicket fielder specially placed for Buttler and it worked. Over 93: England 309/5, Root 38*, Buttler 45* Bhuvneshwar unlucky in the over. He induces an outside edge off Buttler which flies between the third and fourth slips for a streaky boundary. Buttler then dabs one to point, Root comes harng down but is sent back, Pujara misses his shy at the non-striker’s end. Had that hit, Root was a goner. 5 runs off the over. Over 92: England 304/5, Root 38*, Buttler 41* Buttler dabs one to the slip cordon where a misfield allows them a single. Ishant resorts to short length from then on. Root tries to cut one but gets an under edge into the ground. Over 91: England 303/5, Root 38*, Buttler 40* Buttler upping the ante now. At first drives an overpitched delivery firmly wide of mid off for a boundary to bring up England’s 300 & 150 lead adnd then drives one through point for three to end the over. 7 runs off the over. Over 90: England 296/5, Root 38*, Buttler 33* Full from Ishant first ball, Buttler drives it to mid off, some sloppy and tired work from Binny means it races away to the fence. Buttler then taps one to the off side for a quick single. The pair has run really well between the wickets. Over 89: England 291/5, Root 38*, Buttler 28* After playing cautiously at the first four deliveries, Root looks to cut one but misses. He then punches one through point for a couple to end the over. Over 88: England 289/5, Root 36*, Buttler 28* Good delivery first up, short of a good length outside off, jags back in. Buttler is cramped for room and he misses. Gets hit high on the thigh pad. Ishant then takes one away, Buttler jsut about pulls his bat inside at the last moment. The rest deliveries are taken care of easily. A maiden over. Ishant Sharma into the attack now…. Over 87: England 289/5, Root 36*, Buttler 28* After a lovely outswinger which Root leaves alone, Bhuvneshwar delivers it full outside off, Root drives it uppishly and it fall short of the point fielder. Root leaves alone the next ball before defending the next three. A maiden over. Over 86: England 289/5, Root 36*, Buttler 28* After four good deliveries, Aaron drifts one a tad wide, Buttler is quick on to it and punches it through covers for a boundary. Buttler then defends the rest two deliveries. Over 85: England 285/5, Root 36*, Buttler 24* Buttler getting a move on as he cuts one through backward point for a boundary. He then pushes one to mid off for a single. 5 runs off the over. Over 84: England 280/5, Root 36*, Buttler 19* Buttler pats it to the off side for a single off the first ball. Aaron then hurries Root with a quick delivery which Root defends into the ground. Root then looses his focus as he looks to drive at a wide one but misses. The next ball he defends solidly before leaving the last one. Over 83: England 279/5, Root 36*, Buttler 18* Good over from Bhuvneshwar apart from the second delivery where he drifted onto Root’s pads. Root flicked it wide of mid on for a couple. Over 82:England 277/5, Root 34*, Buttler 18* A good first delivery which Root leaves alone, Aaron they strays onto the pads, Root flicks it through square leg for a boundary. Root then gets an inside edge onto his pads on his defense and a huge LBW appeal is turned down by the umpire. Aaron then delivers it full on off, Root looks t push but gets an inside edge to the leg side for a single. Aaron then delivers a yorker, Buttler brigns his bat down late and gets an outside edge between third slip and gully for a streaky boundary. Varun Aaron will bowl from the other end. Over 81: England 268/5, Root 29*, Buttler 14* Bhuvneshwar looked down on pace. Root clips one through mid-wicket for three off the first ball. Bhuvneshwar then bowls a couple of good outswingers which Buttler leaves alone. Buttler then blocks one before leaving the last one alone. India have taken the 2nd new ball. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back into the attack. Over 80: England 265/5, Root 26*, Buttler 14* After a couple of good length deliveries, Binny overpitches one outside off, Buttler drives it through covers for a boundary. The next ball has some extra bounce and Root does well to dab it with soft hands towards gully for a single. Buttler defends the next two balls. 5 runs off the over. Aaron is warming up and looks like India will take the second new ball straightaway. Over 79: England 260/5, Root 21*, Buttler 14* 3 runs off the over. Root at first clips it through mid-wicket for a couple and then pushes one to covers. Ashwin will continue…… Over 78: England 257/5, Root 18*, Buttler 14* Root punches one to point for a single off the first ball. Binny then delivers it a tad wide outside off, Buttler looks to cut but misses. Buttler is cautious off the next three deliveries. Binny then bowls a full and sharp inswinger, Buttler looks to flick but misses. A stifled LBW appeal is turned down. Over 77: England 256/5, Root 17*, Buttler 14* Too easy for Root and Buttler off the final three balls as they take three singles. Over 76: England 253/5, Root 15*, Buttler 13* Root steers one to point for a single. Binny then delivers a beauty, it jags back in sharply from outside off, Buttler comes foward for a prod but is cut into half, the ball whizzes inches past the off stump. Buttler then leaves one and blocks another before Binny drifts one down the leg side for an innocuous delivery. Over 75: England 252/5, Root 14*, Buttler 13* Buttler clips one to mid-wicket for a single off the first ball. Ashwin then delivers a beautifully tossed up delivery outside off, Root looks ot drive but misses. Dhoni too misses it and they run through for a couple of byes. Root then takes a single to mid-wicket and Buttler blocks the rest. Over 74: England 248/5, Root 13*, Buttler 12* Good probing over from Binny first up after tea. Root clips the second delivery through mid-wicket for a couple. Root then plays the next four balls cautiously. Right! Back after tea….Binny will start off proceedings for India. That’s tea on day 2: Finally India win a session. They scalped 4 wickets for 98 runs. Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers in that session. England lead by 98 runs, India need some quick wickets after the break! Over 73: England 246/5, Root 11*, Buttler 12* After four dot balls, Root pushes one wide of mid off for a single. Ashwin then drifts down the leg side side, Buttler nudges it to fine leg for a boundary. That’s tea on day 2! Over 72: England 241/5, Root 10*, Buttler 8* Good over from Binny apart from the overstepped no ball. 2 runs off it. Stuart Binny into the attack now…… Over 71: England 239/5, Root 9*, Buttler 8* Root take a single to square leg off the third ball, after two good deliveries, Ashwin drops it short outside off, Buttler punches it through covers for a boundary. 5 runs off the over. Over 70: England 234/5, Root 8*, Buttler 4* Root pushes it to cover for a single. Ishant then brings one back sharply, Buttler misses his clip and gets hit on the pads. They all go up in a huge appeal but the umpire says no. Rightly so as it was missing leg. Ishant then drags one short and Buttler pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary. Buttler seems to have hurt his leg after the one he missed off Ishant and had an LBW shout turned down. It looked as if it his the top of the knee. Over 69: England 229/5, Root 7*, Buttler 0* Good stuff from Ashwin, Root takes a single off the 2nd ball, Moeen straightaway tries to attack Ashwin and looks to go over mid off but gets an outside edge which falls wide of the short third man fielder for a couple. After a couple of defenses, Moeen drags one on odd the last ball. OUT! Moeen drags it on! MM Ali b Ashwin 14 (24b 2x4 0x6) Flighted and on a length area outside off, it goes straight on. Moeen is caught in two minds whether to play or leave, he leans forward for a prod but then takes his bat away a the last moment. The ball takes the bottom edge onto the stumps. Ashwin back into the attack…….. Over 68: England 226/4, Root 6*, Moeen 12* Just a run off the over. Ishant Sharma is in midst of a good spell here. He’s getting it to reverse a tad! Over 67: England 225/4, Root 5*, Moeen 12* Root drives one to mid off where the fielder makes half a stop, they take a couple. Root then stands tall and punches one through point off the next ball for three. Moeen then sees off the over cautiously. Over 66: England 209/4, Root 0*, Moeen 12* Good tight over from Ishant. A maiden. Over 65: England 220/4, Root 0*, Moeen 12* Poor lines by Aaron in that over. Drifts ont he pads off the first two balls, Moeen flicks one through mid-wicket for a boundary and then through square leg for another one. After a good length delivery outside off, Aaron again drifts one onto the pads, Moeen clips it through mid-wicket for three. 11 runs off the over. Over 64: England 209/4, Root 0*, Moeen 1* ishant oversteps odd the first ball and delivers a wayward one. He then removes Bell off the next ball. Then sprays it wide outside off to Moeen which Dhoni can’t stop and it runs away for four byes. Ali then clips one to long leg for a single to get off the mark. Moeen Ali strides out to the middle. OUT! Ishant strikes straightaway! IR Bell c Dhoni b Sharma 7 (16b, 0x4, 0x6) Good length delivery outside off, swings in and then straightens off the pitch, Bell stays in his crease and looks to defend but is squared up a tad. He edges it behind and Dhoni makes no mistake. Ishant Sharma into the attack now….. Over 63: England 201/2, Bell 5*, Root 0* A good over from Ashwin. Maiden wicket. Joe Root is the new batsman. OUT! Ashwin has his 1st wicket of the series! GS Ballance c Pujara b Ashwin 64 (117b 13x4 0x6) Loopy and a tad full outside off, Ballance lunges forward and dabs it straight into the hands of the silly point fielder. Strange dismissal! Over 62: England 201/2, Ballance 64*, Bell 5* Good probing over from Aaron. Delivers a good length delivery outside off, it kicks off the surface, Bell just about brings his bat inside the line at the last moment. Bell then goes for a half-hearted cut but ends up getting a bottom edge into the ground to the slip cordon. Bell then steers one past gully for a couple. He then drives one through covers for another couple. 4 runs off the over. Varun Aaron will continue…… Gary Ballance has now gone past 500 runs in this series! Over 61: England 197/2, Ballance 64*, Bell 0* Bell gets off the mark as he tucks one to square leg for a single. Ballance then whips a short delivery on off through mid-wicket for a boundary. 5 runs off the over. Over 60: England 192/2, Ballance 60*, Bell 0* Ballance sees through the over cautiously. Aaron is in good rhythm at the moment. A MAIDEN OVER. Over 59: England 192/2, Ballance 60*, Bell 0* A single off the over. Bell looking positive, using he feet against Ashwin. Over 58: England 191/2, Ballance 59*, Bell 0* Aaron drops it short on off, Cook pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary. Aaron then bowls a beauty and beats Cook with an outswinger and then the very next ball draws the outside edge to remove the England skipper. Ian Bell is the new batsman. OUT! A scratchy innings comes to an end! AN Cook c Vijay b Aaron 79 (183b 9x4 0x6) Finally India hold on to a catch in the slips! Full outside off, Cook looks to drive but gets an outside edge to first slip where Vijay dives to his right and pouches it inches above the ground. Good catch Over 57: England 187/1, Cook 75*, Ballance 59* 5 runs off the over. Ballance hits a lovely cover drive off an overpitched delivery. Over 56: England 182/1, Cook 74*, Ballance 55* 3 runs off the over. Good tight stuff from Aaron. He is bowling in good channel and with right pace. Over 55: England 179/1, Cook 71*, Ballance 55* This is shambles from India. Another DROP! Cook goes back and looks to cut but gets an outside edge to first slip where Rahane fluffs it. Ballance then drives one through covers for a couple. Over 54: England 176/1, Cook 70*, Ballance 53* Good over from Aaron. He had Cook guessing in that over. Aaron delivers a good inswinger outside off, Cook looks to drive but gets an inside edge which flies wide of the leg stump. Another inswinger the next ball and Cook again gets an inside edge to the leg side. Cook is battling out in the middle. Here’s the Cook drop off Aaron Over 53: England 174/1, Cook 69*, Ballance 53* Another one-run over. England taking it easy at the moment. Over 52: England 174/1, Cook 68*, Ballance 53* A tight over from Aaron. Just a run off the over. He is bowling good lines now. Over 51: England 173/1, Cook 67*, Ballance 53* Just a single where Cook pushes it to point for a single. They are playing Ashwin easily. Over 50: England 172/1, Cook 66*, Ballance 53* Aaron oversteps first ball and Cook misses his defense a stifled appeal but Aaron realises it’s a no ball. Aaron then offers width, Cook pounces on to it quickly and cuts it through gully for a boundary. Then comes the unbelievable! Aaron induces an outside edge off Cook with a beautiful outswinger but Vijay at 1st slip drops a dolly! Cook then flicks one to deep mid-wicket comfortably for a single. Over 49: England 166/1, Cook 61*, Ballance 53* Cook takes a single in that over to bring up the 100-run stand. Over 48: England 165/1, Cook 60*, Ballance 53* Bhuvneshwar looks tired! He drifts one onto Ballance’s pads who clips it to fine leg for a boundary. He then drops one short outside off off the last delivery of the over, Ballance cleverly upper cuts it over the slip cordon to third man for a boundary to bring up his 3rd Test fifty! The run machine goes on and on and on…… Over 47: England 157/1, Cook 60*, Ballance 45* The first couple of deliveries are good, flighted and full but then Ashwin drags one short outside off, Ballance cuts it through point for a boundary. The England No.3 then tucks one to the leg side for a single. 5 runs off the over. Ashwin will bowl from the other end. Over 46: England 152/1, Cook 60*, Ballance 40* A loosener first up from Bhuvneshwar, on the pads, Cook trickles it to fine leg for a boundary. England take the lead! Bhuvneshwar then gets his lines right, Cook sees off the over defensively. Right! Back after lunch……Bhuvneshwar Kumar will start off proceedings for India. Lunch day 2: It’s the fourth session that England have won in a row. They scored 86 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the morning session. After losing Robson early, Cook and Ballance batted sensibly and they are in the midst of 82-run unbeaten stand. Varun Aaron was the pick of the bowlers for India. Ishant was good in patches but India need to up the ante after the break. Over 46: England 148/1, Cook 56*, Ballance 40* Ballance hits a crunching cover drive off Ashwin for a four to bring the scores level. It’s lunch on day 2! Over 44: England 144/1, Cook 56*, Ballance 36* Yes you can see the Indians are jaded. Cook clips the first delivery to mid-wicket where Bhuvneshwar dives lazily it sneaks through and reaches the fence. Four runs off the over. Over 43: England 140/1, Cook 52*, Ballance 36* Good tight over from Ashwin, just a single off it. Over 42: England 139/1, Cook 51*, Ballance 36* Two runs to the leg side. Otherwise a decent over from Ishant. Finally, some good news for Indian cricket fans. India Women beat England Women by 6 wkts in one-off Test. Eng 92 & 202, India 114 & 183/4. Over 41: England 137/1, Cook 50*, Ballance 35* Cook brings up his 38t Test fifty with a four through gully. Ashwin drops it a tad short, Cook goes back and cuts it through gully. The England skipper then defends the other four deliveries cautiously. But it’s been a fantastic turnaround for Cook. He was unders a lot of pressure after the Lord’s defeat. Over 40: England 133/1, Cook 46*, Ballance 35* Ishant has problems with overstepping. Oversteps a couple of times in the over. He drops one short to Cook who pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a single. The rest deliveries are dealt with cautiously. 3 runs off the over. Ishant Sharma back from over the wicket……. Over 39: England 130/1, Cook 45*, Ballance 35* Good stuff from Ashwin first up. He delivers the first one wide outside off, it turns away sharply. Ballance looks to cut but misses. Ashwin then varies his pace well and Ballance defends or leaves alone cautiously. Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack now…….. Over 38: England 130/1, Cook 45*, Ballance 35* Good tight over from Ishant, a maiden over. Over 37: England 130/1, Cook 45*, Ballance 35* Binny is a bit expensive here. But his is unlucky off the second ball as he induces an outside edge which flies wide of third slip for a boundary. So many runs through that region, still no signs of fourth slip or a third man. Ballance then gets one off the middle and drives it through mid on for three. Cook then clips one to long leg for a single. 8 runs off the over. Over 36: England 122/1, Cook 44*, Ballance 28* Cook leaves the first one alone, he again leaves the second one alone but it swings back in late after passing the England captain. Dhoni misses it and it runs away for four byes. Cook sees off the rest of the over cautiously. The partnership is over 50 now. Indian bowlers need to up the ante now……… Over 35: England 118/1, Cook 44*, Ballance 28* Binny didn’t get his lines right in that over. A couple of deliveries on the pads, Cook at first takes a single to the leg side and then Ballance clips off his pads for a couple. Binny then delivers a half volley outside off, Cook leans forward and drives it through covers for a boundary. 7 runs off the over. Stuart Binny into the attack now….. Over 34: England 111/1, cook 43*, Ballance 22* Ishant bowls a beauty first up, it’s on good length outside off, nips away with some extra bounce. Cook looks to push but is beaten by the away movement. After a couple of leaves and a defense, Cook pulls a short delivery with disdain through mid-wicket for a boundary. Cook then clips one through mid-wicket for one. 5 runs off the over. Over 33: England 106/1, cook 38*, Ballance 22* Ballance at first pushes it to covers for a single. After an innocuous delivery outside off, Aaron bowls a beauty which nips away and snakes off the surface. Cook feels for it and gets beaten. Aaron then oversteps as Cook leaves it alone. Cook clips one through mid-wicket for a single off the last delivery of the over. 3 runs off the over. Drinks break…….. Over 32: England 103/1, cook 37*, Ballance 21* Good tight over from Ishant Sharma. A maiden. STAT: Ishant has dismissed Cook eight times in Tests, the same number as Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris. Nobody has got Cook out more often. Over 31: England 103/1, cook 37*, Ballance 21* A good first couple of deliveries in the over. Full on off, swinging in, Ballance looks to drive but gets an inside edge towards mid on. Aaron then delivers one that moves away, Ballance looks to drive but gets an outside edge which flies wide of the slip cordon for a boundary. Ballance leaves alone the next four balls. 4 runs off the over. Over 30: England 99/1, cook 37*, Ballance 17* Good tight first over from Ishant. Just one run off the over where he overstepped and delivered a no ball. Ishant Sharma into the attack now….
