Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh scaled new heights in his chess-playing career after he won the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday. Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren with a 7.5-6.5 scoreline to become only the second Indian to clinch the World Championship title , with Viswanathan Anand being the only other Indian to do so.
Gukesh, 18, also became the youngest-ever world champion , beating Garry Kasparov’s record. Kasparov was 22 years old when he won the World Championship title in 1985. Gukesh is 18th champion of the World Chess Championship overall.

The Chennai youngster had qualified for the World Championship match against defending champion Ding Liren after having won the 2024 Candidates tournament in Toronto in April.
