The excitement is building up towards the 2024 World Chess Championship match between defending champion Ding Liren of China and India’s D Gukesh that will take place in Singapore from 25 November to 13 December. The World Chess Championship match will be a best-of-14 contest with tie-breaks if necessary.
Gukesh is in top form this year. He qualified for the World Chess Championship match against defending champion Liren after winning the 2024 Candidates tournament in Toronto earlier this year. The 18-year-old continued his stellar year, helping India win a historic gold medal at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

Liren, on the other hand, has not had a great year. The 32-year-old has battled depression and struggled with mental health since beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the World Chess Championship match in April 2023. Liren’s last win came at the 2024 Tata Steel Chess tournament in Netherlands in January.
