D Gukesh hopes to give his best in the final game (Game 14) of the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 which can potentially decide the winner. The best-of-14-game series is currently tied at 6.5-6.5 after 13 games and the winner of Game 14 will be crowned the chess world champion. However, another draw will lead to tiebreakers between Gukesh and reigning world champion Ding Liren.
India’s 18-year-old chess sensation Gukesh had a golden opportunity to secure a significant lead on Tuesday as he opened Game 13 on Tuesday with white pieces and pushed his opponent into a corner, but Chinese Grandmaster Ding was up to the task as he stretched the game to 68 moves and secured a draw by threefold repetition.
Gukesh on Game 13: ‘I came for a fight, I was feeling fresh’
Gukesh did not express much disappointment at the result despite Ding having the advantage of white pieces for Game 14.
“As close as the match gets, it only gets exciting. Quite excited, but of course, it’s an important game. I will try to do my best,” Gukesh said in the post-Game 13 press conference. “This is something every chess player wants to experience, and I have the chance. I’ll enjoy it and give it my best. Whatever the outcome is, I’ll enjoy it.”
Asked about his feelings before Game 13, Gukesh said: As the games get less and less, there is more at stake, obviously. I came for a fight, I was feeling fresh, I was feeling confident. And I also had this cool idea prepared, so I was quite excited to play."
Liren was pushed to the brink in a tough middle game but an impressive 31…Rf8 when every other move looked suicidal not only helped him get into an advantageous position but once again showcased the 32-year-old’s capabilities.
Ding, however, didn’t reveal much in the press conference and said that it was a tiring game for him.
“Firstly, very tired after a long game. Secondly, I need to decide what’s the strategy for the next game, it’s a golden game,” he said.
