Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest-ever chess world champion after he defeated China’s Ding Liren in Game 14 of the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore. Gukesh did so at the age of 18 years, eight months and 14 days.
As It Happened | D Gukesh defeats Ding Liren in Game 14 of World Chess Championship
He beat Garry Kasparov’s record of 22 years, six months and 27 days when he had won the title in 1985. Gukesh and Liren had come into this game with scores tied at 6.5-6.5 after 13 games, which meant that whoever won Thursday’s game would be crowned world champion. Gukesh also became only the second Indian, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand, to clinch the World Championship title.
Congratulatory messages poured in for Gukesh after the teenager from Chennai created history. Here are a few reactions:
WE HAVE A NEW WORLD CHAMPION! ♟️ 🔥 🏆
