CWG: India in semis of badminton mixed team despite Sindhu’s defeat

Indian shuttlers made light of their leading woman player Pusarla Venkata Sindhu’s shock defeat by overpowering Canada 3-1 to enter the semi-finals of the mixed team championship in the Commonwealth Games. India were cruising when Jwala Gutta and Kidambi Srikanth won their opening mixed doubles and Parupalli Kashyap took his men’s singles Saturday night. Then Sindhu went down to Hong Kong-born Michelle Li over three games, but the men’s doubles pair Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar clinched it though the match into three games. Kashyap then outclassed Andrew D’Souza 21-11, 21-9 in a men’s singles to make it 2-0 for India. Hong Kong-born Michelle stunned Sindhu after losing the first game and clinching the second on extra points. That was enough for Michelle to rally and take the match 15-21, 22-20, 21-17 in an hour. Chopra and Dewalkar, though were stretched to three games, won the decisive rubber 21-15 19-21 21-13 against Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng in 49 minutes.
