Day five - 27 gold medals across 12 sports are at stake Silver for Vikas Thakur in weightlifting Vikas Thakur was struggling with what looked like a lower-back injury but still managed to lift an incredible total of 333kg. He first got 150kg in snatch followed by 183kg in clean & jerk. Great effort! Boxing Men’s Middleweight (75kg): Vijender Singh won his bout against Kasuto of Namibia to move into the last 8. One more win and he will be assured of at least a bronze. India won the singles ties but Singapore won all the doubles ties to win the medal. Women’s doubles: Jwala/Ponnappa fought hard but lost to Sari/Yao in straight games – 21-17, 29-27. The second game saw the Indian pair save 5 match points and have a few game points of their own but they couldn’t close it out. ——– ——— ——— Women’s singles: Brilliant comeback from PV Sindhu. She trailed for most of the game before winning 24-22 to take 1-0 lead vs Liang. The Indian star took the second game (21-13) as well to level the tie at 2-2. The women’s doubles will be the decider. ——– ——— ——— Men’s Doubles: SIN’s Chrisnanta/Triyachart take the first game against IND’s Dewalkar/Chopra 21-12. The SIN pair took the second game 21-16. The Indian pair never got going. SIN back in the lead 2-1. ——– ——— ——— Men’s Singles: Kashyap took the first game against SIN’s Huang 21-15 and then took the second game 22-20 to win the match and even the tie at 1-1. The match lasted 37 mins. Huang’s cross court smash gave Kashyap some trouble in the second game and Kashyap was even down a game point but he eventually came through. ——– ——— ——— The Indian pair lost the second game 21-19 as well. Once again a close game – but the Singapore team won the crucial points. Singapore lead the tie 1-0. Gurusaidutt/Ponappa lost the first game 21-19 against D Chrisnanta/V Neo. Squash Men’s Singles Bronze Medal Match : Saurav Ghosal lost to Peter Barker of England 5-11 11-6 5-11. TT Bronze medal match: IND vs NGR Nigeria beats India 3-1 and wins the bronze medal. - Sharath Achanta Kamal lost the fourth match to O Onaolapo 11-9, 3-11, 11-7, 11-5. - O Onaolapo/Toriola beat Arputharaj/Desai in a tough five games: 3-11, 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9. - Harmeet Desai lost the second singles 7-11 8-11 11-9 5-11 to Q Aruna. Nigeria and India are now tied 1-1. - Sharath Achanta Kamal won 1st singles match beating S Toriola 11-9, 11-5, 11-7. India now lead 1-0. Shooting results Men’s Trap qualifcation: Mansher Singh and Manavjit Singh Sandhu have both qualified for the final. Mansher shot a perfect 50/50 while Manavjit shot 49/50. Australia’s M Diamond (a former Olympic gold medallist) split the two by finishing second – he also had a score of 49/50. Women’s Trap qualification: Shreyasi Singh failed to qualify despite a total of 45 (22 in first series, 23 in second series). Seema Tomar failed to qualify as well. Top qualifier was C Skinner of Australia with 49. The women’s trap final begins at 1930 IST. Shooting 50m Rifle Prone Men’s Qualification: Gagan Narang finishes at 620.5 points – third place in qualifying while Joydeep Karmakar finishes at 617 points in 9th place – just missing out on qualification. Only the top 8 shooters qualify. Australia’s W Potent was the top qualifier with 624.5 points. Finals scheduled at 1815 hrs IST today. 50m Air pistol qualifier: Indian shooter Jitu Rai broke the Commonwealth Games record to march into the 50-metre men’s pistol finals while compatriot Gurpal Singh also qualified, finishing sixth. Rai, 27, amassed 562 points and finished top of the standings, a sizeable 15 points ahead of Englishman Kristian Callaghan in second. Roger Daniel of Trinidad and Tobago was third with 545 points. With 538 points, Gurpal Singh also booked a berth in the finals. The final will take place at 1645 IST. Late last night India’s Saurav Ghosal was outclassed by former World No.1 James Willstrop of England in straight sets in the men’s singles squash semifinals at the Scotstoun Squash Campus here. The 27-year-old fourth seed lost 8-11, 8-11, 5-11 on Sunday night. Ghosal’s hard-fought 3-2 victory over New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson in the quarterfinals had made him the first Indian to reach the singles semifinals since the sport was introduced in the Games programme in 1998. Medals tally Australia have overtaken England and are leading the medals tally with 24 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze on the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games 2014. India were sixth with a tally of 20 medals, including five gold, eight silver and seven bronze. With some of the big name shooters stepping into the fray, India will have a good chance of adding to the tally.
