The 21st Commonwealth Games began on Thursday and it was widely believed that Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the 23-year-old weightlifter from Manipur, was India’s best hope of a gold medal on the opening day. Mirabai, the 2017 World Champion, was looking forward to upgrading her silver at the 2014 Glasgow edition to a gold. On Thursday, every single time Mirabai lifted the weights in both the snatch category and clean and jerk, she broke a CWG record. Mirabai was so dominant on Thursday en route to winning the first gold for India at CWG 2018 that her cumulative weight lifted was 26 kgs more than the silver medallist. Earlier in the day, in men’s weightlifting (56 kg), P Gururaja opened the account for India at the Gold Coast event by winning a silver medal. With weightlifters bringing India glory on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games, here’s how Twitter reacted to the strong start: Mary Kom, who is also part of the Indian contingent at the CWG. was among the first ones to wish Mirabai
