CLT20 as it happened: Perera blasts Sunrisers past T&T in thriller

0010 IST Karan Sharma finished off the game with an edge for four then and then a cracking six over midwicket off a short ball from Emrit. That was another nail biter but Sunrisers have pulled it off. They win by four wickets with three balls to spare. It was all down to Perera, who made 57 from 32 balls with four sixes and four fours. Sammy also played his part in a big 17th over which turned the game around and Sharma finished things off in style. Poor Narine took 4 for 9 from his four overs but still ended up on the losing side. 2355 IST Narine and Ramdin combined to brilliantly stump Vihari. chance A carrom ball fooled Vihari, who played for turn that wasn’t there. When Ramdin took the bails off, Vihari had dragged his toe on to the line with nothing of his foot behind it. A brutal onslaught from Sammy and Perera plunded 34 runs from two overs – with Sammy the beneficiary of another drop. That reduced the equation to 21 from 18 balls But then Narine took two in two to create more uncertainty in what has turned out to be another close match in Mohali. After 18 overs, Sunrisers are 142/6, needing 19 more for the win with Karan Sharma and Perera at the crease. 2325 IST Sunrisers suffer another blow when Duminy is run-out by a direct hit going for a sharp single. Duminy run out 17 (16b 2x4 0x6) After 12 overs, they 83 for 3, with Perera on 10 and Vihari on 14. Sunrisers need 78 from 48 balls now but Perera could change the game. A quick flurry of shots from him could rearrange the equation in no time. 2305 IST After 7 overs, T&T are 50 for 2. Dhawan looked to be finding his groove when the second ball from Navin Stewart stopped on him and he popped a tame return catch back to the bowler. Dhawan c & b Stewart 23 (18b 3x4 1x6) Dhawan had slog-swept Badree for six in the previous over and T&T will be invigorated by getting rid of the danger man. 2250 IST After 4.1 overs, Sunrisers are 35 for 1. Sunil Narine struck with his first ball. It bounced more than Parthiv Patel expected, and he looped a catch to short third man. Patel c Stewart b Narine 17 (15b 2x4 1x6) It brought an end to a streaky innings. H was dropped off the first ball. The fielder at deep third man made good ground to his left to get to the ball, but then let it spill through his fingers as he put in the slide. The single brought Dhawan on strike and he elebrated by cutting Ravi Rampaul for four off his first ball. Parthiv played one audacious flick of Rampaul in the third over, picking up a good length delivery and using his bottom hand to send it flying to midwicket, where it lands on the boundary rope. But in the next over, he was struck a sharp blow on the helmet when he charged Rayad Emrit and missed with his slog. He recovered after some treatment to edge the next ball past the keeper for four more. But his luck finally ran out. 2215 IST Three wickets fell in the final over, two to Perera and one run-out as T&T stumbled to the finish. First Ramdin was caught at deep square leg. D Ramdin c Steyn b Perera 21 (15b 3x4 0x6) The next ball Narine was run out for a diamond duck. SP Narine run out 0 (0b 0x4 0x6) And finally Stewart was yorked by Perera. ND Stewart b Perera 17 (13b 1x4 1x6) Perera finished with 2 for 26 as T&T ended up with 160 for 8. 2200 IST Sammy picks up a second wicket when Nicolas Pooran is beaten by the bounce and gets an outside edge through to the keeper Pooran c †Patel b Sammy 6 (5b 1x4 0x6) After 18 overs, T&T are 141 for 5, with Ramdin on 10 and Stewart on 14. Sammy has 2 for 21 from his four overs. 2150 IST Sammy strikes. Mohammad goes for the big shot off a length ball and misses. The ball crashes into middle stump. JN Mohammed b Sammy 19 (27b 1x4 0x6) After 15 overs, T&T are 114 for 4. 2140 IST OUT! Bravo looks to have Ishant’s number as he smacks him for four and another six, this one into the sight screen, but Ishant wins this battle when Bravo gets trigger happy and finds Dhawan in the covers with one more attacking shot. End of a very good innings. Bravo c Dhawan b I Sharma 66 (44b 5x4 4x6) After 13 overs, T&T are 110 for 3. Denesh Ramdin is the new batsman. 2130 IST Darren Sammy bowls an excellent first over, giving away just one run. Might have been more had Bravo’s drive off the first ball not crashed in to Mohammed’s ribs at the non-striker’s end. Mishra isn’t so effective though. Bravo dances down and picks him up and deposits him over midwicket for six, then repeats the dose straight down the ground. Bravo gets to his 50 with a single off the last ball of the over. Took him 37 balls, and contains three sixes and three fours After 12 overs, T&T are 89 for 2, with Bravo on 50 and Mohammed on 14. 2120 IST Thisara Perera is able to keep the scoring rate down, with a couple of tidy overs. Mishra is also able to limit the damage.Gives away just four runs from his second over, all of them singles. After 10 overs, T&T are 73 for 2. 2112 IST Amit Mishra was brought on in the eighth over. Mohammed is able to wait and cut Mishra delicately between the two fielders at point and short third man. Steyn puts in the dive at short third man but can’t get there and the ball runs away to the rope. After 8 overs, T&T are 64 for 2, with Bravo on 32 and Mohammed on 7. 2100 IST Ishant has a torrid time against Bravo, who hits for six in his second over then thumps him through the offside for a couple of fours in his third over. But after a single to Bravo, Ishant comes back with a wicket. Gets one to seam away and catch the edge of Lewis’ bat. Lewis c †Patel b I Sharma 22 (14b 4x4 0x6) Earlier, Dhawan brought on Hanuman Vihari in a surprise move, perhaps banking on his taking the ball away from both left-handers. His first two balls are smashed over point by Lewis for four, but he finished hte over with four straight dot balls. After 6 overs, T&T are 50 for 2. Jason Mohammed is the new batsman. 2050 IST After 3 overs, T&T are 24 for 1, with Lewis on 14 and Bravo on 7. Ishant Sharma gets plenty of bounce from this wicket but bowls too short a length to make the batsman play. When he does pitch one up, Bravo somehow chips the ball over midwicket and the outfield is so slow, the batsmen run four, meaning Amit Mishra’s chase and dive goes in vain. Steyn is wayward in his second over. Bowls a couple of wides outside off. Lewis also crunches a full, wide delivery past point and muscles the fifth ball to the boundary in the same area. 14 from the over. 2037 IST The players are out on the field. Dale Steyn has the new ball. Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis are the openers. Simmons has strike. Two slips in place for Steyn. OUT! Steyn strikes first ball. Simmons charges down the track and swings across the line and gets a very thin edge through to the keeper. That was a wild slog. Simmons c †Patel b Steyn 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) Darren Bravo is the new batsman. Evin Lewis manages a couple off the last ball of a very good Steyn over. T&T are 4 for 1. 2012 IST Here are the playing XIs: Sunrisers: P Patel, S Dhawan, H Vihari, JP Duminy, T Perera, D Sammy, AA Reddy, K Sharma, A Mishra, D Steyn, I Sharma. T&T: L Simmons, E Lewis, DM Bravo, J Mohammed, D Ramdin, N Pooran, N Stewart, S Narine, R Emrit, S Badree, R Rampaul 2005 IST Thanks to the rain that that delayed the start of the first game by 45 minutes, the second game will be delayed at well. The match will start at 8:32 pm India time. Dhawan once again says that it is easier to chase here, which is why he has decided to bowl first. For Sunrisers, Thisara Perera returns, while Hanuma Vihari gets his first game of the tournament while T&T have swapped Sherwin Ganga for Navin Stewart. Preview Qualifiers Sunrisers Hyderabad take on a fired up Trinidad and Tobago when the two sides square off in their Group B clash of the Champions League Twenty20 in Mohali. The Sunrisers, who lost their final qualification tie to Otago, will be looking to rebound against a Caribbean side whose confidence will be sky high after successfully defending a low total against Brisbane Heats in their opening group match yesterday. The experience of playing at the Mohali’s PCA track in the qualifiers would help the Sunrisers in their pursuit to get off to a strong start in the group. [caption id=“attachment_1131113” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Shikhar Dhawan made two half-centuries in the qualifiers. BCCI Shikhar Dhawan made two half-centuries in the qualifiers. BCCI[/caption] Skipper Shikhar Dhawan has been in great touch this seasons and Sunrisers will need him to score runs against a tough bowling attack, with all-rounder Thisara Perera to play the role of finisher. The Hyderabad franchise is expected to field the same team with overseas players JP Duminy returning for Cameron White. Their bowling, too, looks in good shape with South African speedster Dale Steyn leading the pack of India internationals Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma. Bowling is T&T’s strength too, led by pacer Ravi Rampaul and mystery spinner Sunil Narine, who delivered the goods at Ranchi by taking six wickets between them. Rampaul was terrific both at the start as well as the latter part of the innings to help script a 25-run victory for his side, while Narine was at its deceptive best. On paper, Sunrisers look the stronger unit but they would be wary of the inaugural edition finalist’s ability on sprang up surprises with their combative team spirit.
