Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour LIVE: The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 returns today (7 April) in Paris for the second leg. The second leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 will be bigger than the inaugural leg in Weissenhaus. The Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Tour will have 12 Grandmasters as compared to 10 in Germany. Besides co-founder and world No.1 Magnus Carlsen and winner form first leg Vincent Keymer, the other 10 players are D Gukesh, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Richard Rapport, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidith Gujrathi.
Hans Niemann was one of the initial 12 GMs for the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 but he pulled out at the last minute , forcing the organisers to send an invite to Abdusattorov. While French GM
Alireza Firouzja also withdrew a few days back, allowing Richard Rapport to enter the competition.
Gukesh looks to earn first win in Freestyle Chess Tour
There are four Indian Grandmasters in the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Tour. Besides chess world champion Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidith Gujrathi will also compete for the US$ 200,000 prize money.
Keymer, who won the Weissenhaus leg, currently leads the Grand Slam standings followed by Caruana and Carlsen in second and third respectively. Gukesh, who was the only Indian in the German event, is eighth in the standings after the first leg .
After a round-robin phase in the first two days of the tournament, only eight players will proceed to the knockouts.
The Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Tour has a total prize pool of $750000.
