Freestyle Chess Tour Paris Quarter-finals LIVE: Erigaisi takes on Nakamura in last eight clash

Welcome to live coverage of the Quarter-finals from the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025. Only one Indian Grandmaster — Arjun Erigaisi is part of the quarter-finals. He faces world No.2 Hikaru Nakamura.

Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Paris LIVE Updates: After a disappointing round-robin phase for India at the Paris leg of the ongoing Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi will look to keep the country’s flag flying high as the quarter-finals begin on Wednesday (9 April) .

Erigaisi has shown glimpses of brilliance throughout the event, adapting well to the unconventional and creatively demanding freestyle format. His tactical sharpness and composure under pressure have been key to his progression so far and he’ll need to bring his A-game once again as he faces world No.2 Hikaru Nakamura in the quarter-finals.

Erigaisi carries India’s hopes in Paris

Erigaisi was the only Indian GM to progress to the quarter-finals of Paris Freestyle Chess Tour as world champion D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi were knocked out on Tuesday. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Gujrathi will also be in action on Wednesday but they will be competition in the 9-12 classification rounds.

Gukesh’s early exit has come as a big blow for India as the world no.3 only managed to score 3.5 points in 11 games. His first win in Freestyle Chess Tour came against Erigaisi on Monday but he failed to carry forward the momentum.

Also in the quarter-finals, table-topper Ian Nepomniachtchi will face winner of the Weissenhaus leg, Keymer Vincent, Magnus Carlsen takes on Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave battles against Fabiano Caruana.

The quarter-finals will be played over two matches.
