History will be rewritten when Grandmaster Koneru Humpy takes on teenage sensation Divya Deshmukh in the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025. The Indian women’s chess players have been rewriting history at the ongoing FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 final for a while now, as both Humpy and Divya are the first from the country to reach the semi-final stage of the tournament.

They surpassed the odds once again in the semi-finals as Nagpur’s International Master Divya reached the summit clash by defeating higher-ranked Tan Zhongyi of China 1.5-0.5 and becoming the first ever Indian to reach the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup.

“I think initially I played quite bad with the black pieces and she always had the advantage. After the loss, it was a very difficult situation, but I was able to come back,” she added.

On facing the 19-year-old prodigy Divya in the final, Humpy said: “I think it’s one of the happiest moments for the chess fans… but of course as a player tomorrow it will be quite a tough game as well. Divya has played tremendously well in this whole tournament.”

By reaching the final, both Divya and Humpy are also assured of spots in the Women’s Candidates next year. The winner of the Women’s Candidates will challenge Ju Wenjun of China for the world championship. The winner of the all-Chinese third-place playoff between Lei and Tan will also qualify for the Candidates.
