Norway Chess 2025 Day 1 LIVE Updates: D Gukesh will be facing Magnus Carlsen in what arguably would be the biggest match of his career so far on the opening day of Norway Chess at Stavanger, Norway on Monday. After defeating Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren to become the youngest world champion in chess history in December, Gukesh had expressed his desire for a showdown against Carlsen in the Classical format.
On Monday, Gukesh’s desire will finally be fulfilled as he begins his Norway Chess campaign against the home favourite, with the highly-anticipated showdown between the world champion and the world No 1 headlining the entire event, and not just the opening day.
Carlsen had defeated Gukesh twice in as many meetings in the first two events of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour earlier this year, with the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster having struggled in the unpredictable format that is Chess960.
Monday’s dream showdown, however, will be an entirely different scenario, for Gukesh will be facing Carlsen in his pet format – one that the Norwegian GM has categorically expressed a lack of interest in.
Gukesh and Carlsen won’t be the only individuals in action on Monday, with Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi facing China’s Wei Yi and Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana facing off in an all-American battle.
