Chelsea expected to confirm Di Matteo's appointment

A BBC report claims that Champions League winners Chelsea are expected to confirm the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as manager on a permanent basis this week. This is after it emerged that the ex-Chelsea player’s representatives spoke with Chelsea officials over the weekend and have been assured that owner Roman Abramovich will entrust his faith in him. [caption id=“attachment_339197” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“The contract issues are yet to be finalised but there is no indication that Di Matteo will refuse the offer to stay at the club. Reuters”] ![](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/DiMatteo-Reuters.jpg "Chelsea's coach Di Matteo reacts after their FA Cup final soccer match against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium in London") [/caption] The contract issues are yet to be finalised but there is no indication that Di Matteo will refuse the offer to stay at the club. Chelsea’s season was on a downward spiral under Andre Villas-Boas and Di Matteo took over on an interim basis after the Portuguese was sacked. In a remarkable turnaround, he led them to their first European success— beating Barcelona on the way to the final against Bayern Munich. He also helped them win the FA Cup, losing just three our of 21 matches in charge to restore confidence in the London side. Chelsea may wait till Di Matteo is back from his holidays before making an official announcement. There might be a stumbling block though, with Di Matteo wanting a long-term contract compared to a short-term one which will not allow him to make decisions keeping the club’s future in perspective.
