Rio de Janerio: Brazilian soccer great Ronaldo has called for the resignation of the country’s football confederation (CBF) chief Marco Polo Del Nero, a media report said on Thursday.

The comments came a day after Sepp Blatter announced he would step down as president of world football’s governing body FIFA amid a widening corruption scandal, Xinhua news agency reported.

Del Nero took over as CBF president in April when he replaced Jose Maria Marin, who was one of seven top football officials arrested on graft charges in a dawn raid by Swiss police last week.

“I would love to see him (Del Nero) step down too. He has not given a great example. The relationship he had with the former (CBF) president is evident,” two-time World Cup winner Ronaldo told media in Sao Paulo.

“I think this is just the start and that there remains much to be discovered. Football’s hierarchy needs renewing within the federations. I think that politicians and football administrators caught up in corruption need to go to jail.”

Del Nero has denied allegations linking him to corruption.
