Perfect candidate? BCCI approaches Rahul Dravid for the role of India’s head coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may be considering former Indian captain and batting legend Rahul Dravid for the post of Team India’s head coach. According to a report on  The Times of India, the BCCI advisory committee comprising of former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have thought of offering Dravid the role, and are not considering appointing Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri, whose term as the team director ended with India’s exit from the ICC World T20. Getty Images[/caption] “Rahul has said he will give it a thought,” a source close to the latest developments was quoted as saying by The Times of India. The advisory committee will meet on Tuesday in order to finalise their choice of the coach. Should Dravid be picked, he will be expected to be given a free hand as well as a contract that will extend till the 2019 World Cup. The  The Times of India report also said that BCCI had approached former Australian batsman Mike Hussey for the job, but it did not materialise. Meanwhile, BCCI is set to retain the services of Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar, the assistant, bowling and fielding coach of the Indian team respectively. Dravid, in his current tenure as the coach of the India A and the India Under-19 side, coached the latter to the final of the recent U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. Though India lost to West Indies in the final of that tournament, Dravid’s coaching was hailed by many, especially for his ability to blend with youngsters. Shastri took up the role of the Team India director following the ouster of head coach Duncan Fletcher after India’s 1-3 Test series loss to England in 2014. Since then, India has won the Asia Cup 2016, reached the semi-final of the 2015 World Cup as well as won the T20I series in Australia 3-0.
